Montreal β Team Quebec beat Team Alberta in the championship final of the 2013 Football Canada Cup last night (July 21st), at Rocky Stone Field in Moncton, New Brunswick. Team Quebec, champions of the previous two editions of the national tournament prevailed over their Albertan rivals by a score of 43-12.
Team Alberta quickly took the lead in the first half of the match, which ended with a 12-6 score in their favour. Quebec kicker William Pettersen (# 29, Séminaire Saint-François) put his team on the scoreboard by kicking two field goals.
After halftime, Team Quebec had an explosive effect on the ground and scored 37 points, not giving any to their opponent. An excellent punt return by Mikael PichΓ©-Ayotte (# 1 Wolves CurΓ©-Antoine-Labelle), followed by a one-yard quarterback sneak by Frederic Paquette-Perrault (# 3 Eagles College Jean-Eudes ) earned Team Quebec its first touchdown of the game. Three more touchdowns were scored by Marc-Antoine Pivin (# 12, owls Triolet), Joel Soucy (# 6, Wolves CurΓ©-Antoine-Labelle) and Felix Laflamme (# 81 Centurions of Versatile Two Mountains) from passes by Paquette-Perrault, who was named Offensive Player of the Tournament.
“The positive attitude and perseverance of the players were the key elements of our aggressive return in the second half,β said Team Quebec head coach Brad Collinson.Β βThis motivation comes from their extreme pride they have to represent Quebec and wear its colors to the rest of Canada.β
“This victory is for the provincial training that belongs to the entire football community in Quebec and illustrates the high level of our athletes and the quality of our programs,” added Football Quebec president Jean M. Poirier.
Team Quebec began its journey to gold at the 2013 Football Canada Cup on Saturday July 13th and defeated Alberta in the semifinals Thursday night 40- 6, following a bye in the first round of tournament.
Annually, Team Quebec consists of the top 40 under-18 athletes in the province, selected from more than 400 players from across the provinces, who have tried their luck in the selection process of the Football Quebecβs Program of Excellence.
