Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (West Coast): ATH Sehmi finds courage to work hard and prove his doubters wrong

A self-professed underdog, ATH Sahjun Sehmi says he doesn’t have too much experience playing football. Having only three years under his belt, he currently plays for the Mount Douglas Rams from the AAA Western division in the British Columbia High School Football Association.

No. 43 on the CFC50 high school rankings, the defending AAA provincial champions struggled this year with a 3-3 regular season record. With it being Sehmi’s senior season coming up, he has plans to be the best player he can be. He feels that the Fox 40 Prospect Challenge will help him to do this.

In an extremely clever response regarding why he loves football, Sahjun replied, “Brains v. Brawn; Planning v. Brute Force; Skill v. Dumb Luck. Its the perfect sport. No matter who you are, there is a spot for you on a football team. Fast? RB. Jump high? WR. Violent? LB. Just big? OL. And the ball, the wonderful wonderful ball. Not round, not predictable. If it hits the ground, madness. No “proper” way to carry it. Every play could be the greatest thing you have ever seen, or the most mundane thing you have seen a million times.”

With this in mind, being able to play at multiple positions is something that Sehmi adapt at. He has played at wide receiver, corner back, punt/kick returner, and holder. In order to hone his skills, he plans on working out almost everyday at a high caliber gym with a former player. He also plans on goingĀ to a sprint coach.

All this preparation will indeed help him to become the best player he can be as he stated earlier. We asked him if making it onto the CFC100 top prospects list was a goal for him. He responded, “Being on the CFC 100 would be absolutely unreal, but is it a goal? Not necessarily, I just want to focus on my team and winning a provincial championship. If I made the list that would just make things even better.”

Because we can’t completely capture the essence of Sehmi’s response to if he has any players that he looks up to as a role model, Sahjun caps it off with the complete picture.

My idol would have to be Tom Brady, As a kid who was laughed at for being ā€œsmallā€ and ā€œdumbā€, I found inspiration watching Tom Brady tear up NFL defenses every Sunday. Ā I had witnessed Tom Brady win multiple Super Bowl championships, making his critics regret the time they said that Tom Brady would never make it big in the NFL. Ā Tom Brady inspired me to work my hardest, to prove all those parents and kids that Iā€™m not only intelligent, but physically capable despite my small size. Ā I scored an extremely high 4.0 GPA even though I was supposedly a ā€œretard.ā€ Ā I ended up making the football team at my high school even though I was supposedly a ā€œrunt”. Even though in my first years I didn’t play much and was injured I still pushed forward and this season is my year to shine. Tom Brady proved to the world that anyone can make it big as long as they are given a chance. Tom Brady is a hero to the under looked and underestimated people everywhere, and because of Tom Brady, I found the courage to work hard and prove my doubters wrong.”
