Game PREVIEWS (QC): Last week of the regular season

Division 1 looks like its locked in but there could be a hiccup or two, while D1B is a fight to the bitter end.

Congrats to both  Saint Jean Eudes Condors for winning the D1 Regular Season Championship Banner and to Seminar Saint Joseph Vert Et Or for claiming the D1B Regular season banner.

Division 1 looks like teams can shift around in the standings. Key games to watch this week; Harfangs vs Dynamiques, Cactus vs Les Loups, and Aigles vs Scorpions.

Division 1B is a different story; two teams fight for the last spot while two other teams will fight for the second seed that comes with an all important bye week.

Last week, Saint Jean Eudes Condors locked in their top seed and the only first round bye with utter domination of College Charles Lemoyne, 40-0. Seminar Saint Francois Blizzard locked in the second seed by defeating College Notre Dame, 43-28. In D1B action, Seminar Saint Joseph Vert Et Or barely remained undefeated edging out College de Levis Commandeaurs, 26-23, in overtime. Let’s see how this weeks games match up as there are big implications and stakes.

D1

CFC50 No. 41 É. Sec du Troilet Harfangs (5-3) vs CFC50 No. 25 Collège Charles-Lemoyne Dynamiques. (6-2)

Either way, win or lose, Harfangs will have home field advantage in the first round. The question is will they remain where they are or jump up a spot. Dynamiques were flat out dominated and embarrassed last week. Noah Gravel went 10 for 22 129 yards and nothing to show for it, but 4 interceptions. They need to bounce back against the Harfangs. If they don’t, they will find themselves dropping a position. Harfangs lost last week in a heartbreaker by 2 points. They will need the defense to standout. Felix Mercier has had a solid season with 48 solo tackles, 23 assisted, 1 sack, 1 INT, and 12 TFLs. He will need to bring everything to the table and lead his defence to the task. If the Dynamiques want to get back on track after their embarrassment, they need to protect the ball. Having a high-power passing game is great in the warm weather, but as temps drop QBs tend to lose a little something on the ball, and teams go to the ground. However, when your top ball carriers are your QB and a receiver, you have not only become very one dimensional, but lack in the run game for the colder weather. That said, Dynamiques were exposed last week and the film doesn’t lie, don’t be shocked if you read the Harfangs pulled this one off.

CFC50 No. 42 Collège Notre-Dame Cactus (4-4)  vs É. Sec. Curé-Antoine-Labelle Les Loups (3-5)

Les Loups find themselves in a position they have not been in – the bottom of the pack. Thanks to the tie breaker rules, Les Loups will make the playoffs regardless if they lose this week. But who wants to go into the playoffs after a loss. QB Shawn Grenier has struggled this season; 77 completions, 161 attempts, 968 yards, only 3 touchdown passes, but 12 interceptions has killed the offensive momentum. If Les Loups hope to end the regular season on a high note, Shawn will need to be more accurate and decisive, and look to the run game to keep the Cactus defence on their toes. However, Les Loups may decide to simply rest all the veterans and save energy for the playoffs. Regardless of a win or loss, Les Loups will not change position. Now the Cactus on the other hand could have a hiccup. Currently sitting at 4-4 tie with 4-4 Aigles, the Cactus don’t want to slip. Victory this week locks them in the position they are in if they lose and Aigles win. That would be the situation of a change in the seeding. That said, if the Cactus come out and have a good lead, expect them to rest the veterans. Expect the Cactus to win this one so they lock in. The only way the Cactus drop a spot is if they drop the game as they have the tie breaker of season match up on their side.

É. Sec. Armand-Corbeil Scorpions (1-7) vs CFC50 No. 44 Collège Jean-Eudes Aigles (4-4)

Collège Jean-Eudes, another game where the outcome of this individual matchup doesn’t mean much other than pride. The Aigles are locked in the playoffs. They only chance they have of moving up a position is if the Cactus fall to Les Loups. But this week they face off against the Scorpions. Scorpions, simply put, could not find a rhythm this year and struggled their first year in the division. Regardless of a win, the Scorpions won’t make the playoffs. The tie breaker is in favour of les Loups. That said, Seniors do want the last game of high school to be with a loss. Scorpion pride is on the line and stepping up with a victory will motivate the team coming in next year. Aigles QB, Charles Foisy, will have to be on target with Yan Gaspar Cernacek and David Mailoux Colin. At the end of the day, it is what are you playing for and the Aigles have more to gain than lose. Aigles win.

 CFC50 No. 11 Séminaire Saint François Blizzard (7-1) vs É. Sec Roger-Comtois Patriotes (1-8) .

Patriotes are out of the playoff picture and, unfortunately, have to end the season off against the Blizzard. The Patriotes best hope for a win ……this game means absolutely nothing for the Blizzard win or lose. It would surprise no one if the Blizzard sat all their veterans this week in order to prep for the playoffs. Let’s make this simple. Blizzard are sitting 7-1, even at 7-2 tied with a possible 7-2 Dynamiques, Blizzard have the tie breaker in their favour. Strategically resting the players makes sense and if the coaching staff decides to do that, expect Patriotes to have a win. If not Blizzard hands down.

Académie Saint Louis Arsenal (0-8) vs CFC50 No. 5 Saint-Jean-Eudes Condors (8-0)

Again, an unfortunate position to be in as the winless Arsenal face off against the Condors. Who, as mentioned, embarrassed the Dynamiques, shutting them out last week, 40-0. If by chance, Condors sit all the veterans, this might be a game. But don’t expect that. Expect them to start the veterans and build a good lead by halftime and sit them out. Why not sit them the whole game?? They have the bye week locked in therefore no need to. Arsenal have struggled all year and will continue to do so this week. Arsenal will have to look at rebuilding for the future.

 D1B

Académie Les Estacades Estacades (1-6) vs Polyvalent Deux Montagnes Centurions (2-4)

Let’s put it this way, last week both these teams were run over. Estacades suffered a big loss, 43-0, and mounting less than 100 total offensive yards against the Patriotes, while the Centurions were run over by the Voltigeurs, 43-8.  Both of these teams want the playoffs and right now the spot belongs to the Centurions – and it’s theirs to lose. Centurions are very inconsistent. One week they come out passing, next week run pass, and last week became a one-dimensional run team. Diversity wins games and if the Centurions can be consistent with diverse play calling, then they will dominate the Estacades like they did 2 weeks ago. Estacades want to exact revenge, and in order to take that playoff spot, they must beat the Centurions by more than 22 points. Honestly, I don’t think it is in the cards for them. Two weeks ago they were on the road to face the Centurions and return to do so again. Had to be a scheduling glitch, but regardless, do not expect Estacades to win by a 22-point margin to take the playoff spot, but do expect them to win the game.

É. Sec Pointe-Lévy Corsaires (1-6)  vs CFC25 No. 2 Séminaire Saint-Joseph Vert et Or (7-0)

Green and Gold have the bye week locked up. Despite the Corsaires record, they are an explosive, dangerous team. If you look at the last few years of the Green and Gold, as good as they are, their offensive production looks like a ski slope at the end of the season. To harsh? Well… games 1-4 averaged 37 points per game and the last 3 games averaged 23 points per game. That’s a 14-point difference. They better step up the production or the Corsaires could very well steal one here. CFC100 Dylan Djete and Mikael Aubin will do everything they can with fellow team mates to go out with a win in the final game. Green and Gold should win this one, but keep a close eye out. A team with nothing to lose is ALWAYS a dangerous team.

Collège De Lévis Commandeurs (4-3) vs Collège Laval Marauders (3-4)

This game is very interesting. Regardless of the outcome, these teams will meet next week in the first round of the playoffs.  Last time these two teams met, Commandeurs won by a 15-point margin. So, if Marauders can step up and win this game by 16 points, they will take the home field advantage away from the Commandeurs. You think so, what’s the big deal?? Well Laval and Levis are 3 hours 10 minutes apart add in a 30-minute break, that’s a 3-hour 40-minute trip. Neither team wants to take that trip for the first round of the playoffs. Because if you lose that game, it’s a LONG trip home. Commandeurs are the sleeper team in this division. They took it to the undefeated Green and Gold last week forcing the game into overtime. Their one-man wrecking crew, Nathan Lacasse, has been RSEQ player of the week a couple times and continues to wreck defences. He has caught the ball 48 times for 842 yards, 7 TDs, and ran the ball 34 times for 361 yards and 4 TDs. I’m sure you can do the math. If Laval can shut this man down, they have a shot at winning this game by that 15-point margin. Some people may say it can’t be that easy. Sure, it can. Nathan’s 48 catches on the season is 4 times more than any other receiver on the team. So knowing where Commandeurs are going with the ball is not the problem. It’s simply stopping the man. Flip a coin folks, there is a lot on the line here it’s any one’s game.

CFC25 No. 10 Collège Bourget Voltigeurs (5-2) vs CFC25 No. 8 É. Sec. Saint-Stanislas Patriotes (5-2)

So you thought the other games in this division had a lot on the line and would be a battle. WELL, here is the game with the most on the line.

Two weeks ago, these two faced off in a great game. Patriotes defence stepped up when they needed and Pats pulled out a 17-10 victory. Expect nothing less from this game. It’s going to be a dog fight. Voltigeurs need QB Simon Boudreault and RB Jayden Josiah Theodore to stay calm and stay on course. It’s possible the Voltigeurs thought the last match up would be easy and were shell shocked. But this time out, they will be prepared. Their defence better be ready as well. They know what is on the line and Lancelot Gilbert will be sure to lead his defence against the Patriotes offence with is just as explosive as his. Voltigeurs came in this league with a BANG then ran into the Green and Gold and Patriotes. They can right one of those wrongs this week and take second place and the bye.

Last week, the Patriotes came out strong and fresh. Sharing the ball carrying duties between 7 running backs. They limited their offensive passing game. Best way to beat a high scoring offence like Bourget, don’t let them on the field. The second best way, have your defence ready. And the Patriotes defence is ready. They shut out the Estacades last week, two weeks ago they held Bourget to ten points, and 3 weeks ago held College Laval to 16 points. Make no mistake, this defence is tough, they gang tackle like a pack of dogs and send pressure in multiple ways. Lead by Zachary Varin and Anthony Sofio.

The bottom line is this, as the season gets colder, offences production dips a little. Defences need to get stronger as the season goes, and the edge here goes to the Patriotes. That said, expect this to be a low scoring affair. Flip the coin, it’s anyone’s game, but if Bourget wins this game it won’t be by more than 7 points.
