Gearing Up for Cottage Cup showdown in Peterborough This Weekend

VARSITY

They Huronia Stallions Varsity football team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 64-6 beat down of the Nipissing Wild.  The Stallions took control of the game early with a quick 10-0 advantage after a touchdown run by Zach Kuhn, followed by a Michael Tomcyzk field goal.  The Stallions then racked up five more rushing touchdowns and an additional Tomcyzk field goal. Touchdowns were scored by Kuhn(2), Justin Janicki (2), Issachar Sookwah, and Cruz Beaudry.  Quarterbacks Brendan Hyrncek and Justin Winn both directed the offence very well and effectively executed the passing game, setting up the run.  The defence was led by defensive end Zak Kean who had several tackles and pass defenses.  Nose tackle Spencer MacNamara did a great job clogging up the middle and had an interception on a deflected pass which is a very rare feat for a nose tackle.  What is even more remarkable about MacNamara’s interception is that it was his second of the season!  On special teams, Justin Winn did well in the kicking game and Sookwah and Justin Defaria made several key open field tackles to maintain a decisive edge in field position all day for the Stallions.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity team rebounded from a tough loss last week with a 38-0 victory over an athletic Toronto Junior Argonauts squad.  The Stallions, who moved to 2-1 on the season, were led by their talented quartet of running backs including Michael Cassano who had a key touchdown run.  The other members of the unit, which has earned the moniker the ‘four horsemen,’ are Preston Howard who had two touchdowns, Matthew Edwards who scored as well, and Matthew Koufis who ran hard all day.  The horsemen had over 350 yards rushing which is also a testament to the excellent work of the offensive line.  Quarterback Dan Hawthorne also rushed for a touchdown and kicker Will McCulloch kicked a field goal and made all his convert attempts.  On defence, linemen Gabe Waterhouse and Jared Thompson stuffed the run and linebacker Jonah Lecister had several tackles for loss.

BANTAM

The Huronia Stallions Bantam team improved to 2-0 on the season with a convincing 27-0 victory over the Toronto Junior Argonauts.  The team employed a wildcat style offence due to the absence of starting quarterback Keiran Harrison.  The Stallions offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, which opened lanes for running back Scott Laybolt who scored two touchdowns.  Jayden Mutry and Victor Garcia Lopes also scored rushing touchdowns.  The Stallions defence pitched a shutout with Alex Linke doing a great job at holding the edge and preventing outside runs.  Dresean Cooper and Daniel Havrylchyk shut down the middle and Tyler Turino single handedly prevented a touchdown by chasing down an Argo running back who appeared to be in the clear.

COTTAGE CUP SHOWDOWN

This Saturday the Huronia Stallions will take on the Peterborough Wolverines for the Cottage Cup.  The Cup is awarded to the program who wins the majority of games in an annual triple header which includes the Bantam, Junior Varsity and Varsity divisions.  Last year Peterborough took the Cup winning two of the three games.  Peterborough hosts this year with the following game times: Bantam 11am, Junior Varsity 2 pm, Varsity 5 pm.

On Saturday the Huronia Stallions Bantam team took their game play on the road to the home of the Toronto Jr. Argos.  The Stallions needed to raise their level of play as they went into this game missing their starting QB Keiran Harrison.  The team did just that and shut out the Jr Argos 27-0.

On Offense, the boys executed a wild cat style offense perfectly.  The Offensive line dominated the Argo defensive front allowing Scott Laybolt to score two touchdowns, Jayden Mutry one and Victor Garcia Lopes one also.  Hunter Graham booted the extra points to give the team a total of 27 points

The Stallions Defense slammed the door closed on the Toronto Jr Argos allowing no points.  Alex Linke did a great job of preventing any outside running plays, Dresean Cooper and Daniel Havrylchyk sealed the middle gaps and Tyler Tulino chased down a Argo running back preventing a touchdown.

The Bantam squad are back on the road next week in Peterborough at 11am against the Peterborough Wolverines.
