Tackling the No. 3 seed Bulldogs in Round 1 of the Ontario Varsity Football League junior playoffs, the No. 6-seeded Grenadiers were ahead 19-18 before Brampton connected on a long passing play for the game-winning touchdown.

“They were two long passes, nice throws that got behind our coverage,” said Grenadiers coach Ron Dickey, who felt his team played a very solid game.

“We were ahead all the way. They scored (a touchdown) on a long run off tackle. Other than that and the couple long passes (leading to the game-winning touchdown) it would have been our game.”

The Grenadiers lost to Brampton by 20 points in an early season meeting. However, the 33-13 defeat was turned into a Kingston win when it was determined by league officials that Brampton had played with an ineligible player.

The Grenadiers gained the final playoff berth in the Wettges Conference with a 5-3 record.

In Saturday’s game, quarterback Tyler Filson was able to return to play following a two-week absence because of a shoulder injury. He scored the game’s first major on a one-yard run.

Jean Luc Richardson had the Grenadiers other touchdown, running in from about 15 yards out.

Kicker Scott Keeley booted a 37-yard field goal and two converts. The Grenadiers also scored on a safety.

Several Grenadiers had strong games on the defence. Ryan Hobbs, a defensive back, had six solo tackles and Micah Baerwald had five. Kyle Sovie registered the team’s only quarterback sack.

Dickey expects that all the Grenadiers will be back on the field come September when the high school football season begins.

About a dozen of the Grenadiers are eligible to play at the junior varsity level (under age 17 before June 1 of the competition year).

Dickey also said their is talk at the provincial level that the junior varsity age limit will be changed to coincide with the grade 9 and 10 ages of 14 and 15.
