HMFA Championships: Bombers take bantam, peewee titles

It was a great day to be a Bomber on Sunday as both Peewee and Bantam Hamilton Minor Football Association Minor Development teams from Stoney Creek won championships in Ontario Varsity Football League play at St. Thomas More Field.

The Peewee final was a white-knuckle affair with the game in doubt right to the end. The final score was Bombers 42, Toronto Jets 36, thanks to a Jared Riley touchdown scored with six minutes left, converted by Owen Silverthorne.

In the Bantam finale, the Westdale Eskimos fell behind 26-7 early in the fourth quarter when the Bombers’ Matt Condello scored a rushing touchdown from five yards, but Westdale’s Everton Frost rushed for majors of 67 and four yards – his second and third of the game – to make it close. The final score was Stoney Creek, 26, Westdale 19.

In the Atom championship, the East Mountain Lions kept the title in Hamilton, toppling the Toronto Jets 25-13.

The Peewees also had a Consolation Final, with the East Hamilton Stamps scoring twice in the final quarter to defeat the West Mountain Riders 12-7.

PEEWEE NOTES. Scoring touchdowns for the Bombers besides Riley were Owen Silverthorne (three TDs), Riley MacEwan and Jonah Gray. Silverthorne was named the offensive player of the game for the Bombers while Riley was the defensive star.

BANTAM NOTES. Matt Condello scored two touchdowns for the Bombers in their win and Jaylen Slater took a pass from Adam Jankowski for a 99-yard major. ONeil Lynch earned eight points for the Bombers on kicks. Besides the three Frost TDs, Westdale also scored on a Julian Rettura kickoff rouge. Slater and Frost were named offensive stars and the game and Grant Campbell, of the Bombers, and Tristan Phipps, of the Eskimos, were named defensive players of the game.

ATOM NOTES: Scoring touchdowns for the Lions in their win were Max Barber, Liam Gibson, D’Mitri Duffield and Joseph Saturnino. Barber also kicked a convert. Barber was named the Lions’ offensive star while Ben Elsliger earned the defensive award for the Lions.

PEEWEE CONSOLATION NOTES: Billy Laing scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in the East Hamilton win while Eric Faubert scored on a 95-yard run for the Riders. Thomas Saab got the running convert for the Riders’ other point. Faubert was named offensive player of the game for the Riders. T.J. Richardson got the offensive honours for the Stamps while Laing was named the team’s top defensive player.

In OVFL rep playoff games played Nov. 10, the HMFA’s Jr. Ticats lost 26-24 to Niagara in a Peewee semi-final game played in St. Catharines to close out their season. The Bantams from the HMFA also made to the OVFL semi-finals where they lost 38-28 to Toronto in a game played Nov. 10 at St. Thomas More in Hamilton.
