Hot Start

OFC JV:  Stampeders open season with a big win

The Burlington Stampeders Junior Varsity team is off to a hot start with a 73 – 0 win over the Guelph Bears in their opening game, this Sunday.

The Stampeders dominated the field on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they converted on all 10 of their touchdowns, and defensively they were able to hold the Bears to only 39 yards in rushing and under 200 passing yards.

“They’re a great bunch of kids, and we’re hoping to keep the competition going over the season,” said Stampeders coach Tony Mandalfino.

The offense was led by running back Nick Langley, who was an unstoppable force for the Stamps. Langley finished the game with 139 total rushing yards, and two touchdowns. Quarterback Nathan Rourke also had a strong game, completing nine passes in the first half for 88 yards, as well as a touchdown off of a nine yard run in the second quarter.

Jack Miller, who finished the game with 10 tackles and one and a half sacks, led the defensive effort. George Jeffery and Zack Hoffner also had strong defensive games, with eight and seven tackles respectively.

Nick Kasola played a strong game, kicking all 10 converts as well as a 15 yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

“We had our starters off the field before the second half… our second string quarterback got a lot of reps and played a great game,” said Mandalfino.

The Hamilton Hurricanes are the next opponent for the Stampeders. The Hurricanes won their first game of the season 21 – 14 over the Brantford Bison. Both teams will be looking to keep their winning streak alive. The Hurricanes finished in 12th place last season with a 2 – 6 record.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
