OVFL: Hamilton Ironmen humbled in Week 2 loss

After a big opening week victory over the Etobicoke Eagles (39-0), the Hamilton Ironmen were humbled in week 2 of OVFL action. The Ironmen lost their home opener 27-14 against the Mississauga Warriors, at`McMaster Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.

The Ironmen started off slow Sunday afternoon.Β  The Ironmen were unable to muster any offense in the first half as they punted on every series, but showed perseverance battling back to make the game interesting.

At halftime, the IronmenΒ were trailing 20-0.

After halftime, the Ironmen were able to gain momentumΒ after a devastating hit by defensive back Jordan Samek. The following play the Ironmen forced a fumble, recovered by linebacker Sadik Fouad.

The offense started to come aliveΒ following the turnover, with quarterback Jake Marquette leading the way. After hitting Angelo Del Sordo with a 26 yard gain, the Ironmen were able to get on the scoreboard as Marquette found receiver Weston Aiton-Poore with an 18 yard touchdown toss, 20-7.

The Ironmen had a difficult time slowing down the potent Mississauga offense as the Warriors added another major to increase their lead 27-7.

The Ironmen showed the Warriors they weren’t going down without a fight. After a 45 yard kick return by running back Santiago Velasquez, the Ironmen started the drive in good field position and added to their score.Β  Marquette found receiver #5 Pat Del Sordo for a 40 yard gain. Then, Del Sordo broke tackles and fought his way down to theΒ one yard line, setting up aΒ two yard touchdown run by Ironmen running back Ewan Cameron to narrow the gap 27-14.

The Ironmen defense forced a turnover on downs giving the offense another shot at scoring. Starting at their ownΒ six yard line, Marquette quickly marched the offense down the field scrambling for a 44 yard gain.Β  Unfortunately, the Warriors defense held off the Ironmen attack forcing an interception on a fourth down attempt by the Ironmen.

Marquette finished the day with 263 yards passing, with one touchdown and one interception. Marquette also chipped in with 67 yards rushing.Β  Del Sordo caughtΒ four passes for 105 yards, wide receiver Joey Riccotone caught three passes for 68 yards.

The Ironmen defense was lead by linebacker Levi Jamieson who collectedΒ eight Β tackles on the afternoon.Β Defensive back Β Dezain Brooks finished withΒ six tackles andΒ defensive back Β Jacob Lee talliedΒ three tackles, including recovering aΒ forced fumble.

NOTES: Ironmen were without leading receiver Austin Kit whoΒ sat outΒ due toΒ an injury.Β  The IronmenΒ hope to rebound after a tough home opening loss when they travel to Brampton next week to meet the Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.
