The junior varsity Toronto Jr. Argos suffered a devastating loss this past Sunday to the Peterborough Wolverines, 26-1. Luckily for the Toronto squad, their playoff hopes remain alive as they will play in the post season.
Peterborough has been able to dominate every team in the OFC this season. βThey are 8-0 for a reason,β Says head coach Derek McDonald. βWe prepared well and played tough, but our 35 guys were no match for their talented 60 man roster.β
After some number crunching, the Jr. Argos have officially been put in the fourth place spot in the Mike Ramsay Conference. It came down to a tie with the Sudbury Gladiators who lost their week 8 game to Huronia.
It was quite the season for the Jr. Argos as they battled serious injuries for the entirety of the year. Key players such as their starting quarterback and running back were injured early on and were never able to fully recover. The Jr. Argos also faced recruiting challenges as the team struggled to compete with other Toronto based teams to draw in high caliber players. However, in spite of the challenges they were able to have the sixth best offense in the OFC and make the playoffs.
In other Jr. Argo news, the team has decided to let go current head coach Derek McDonald. βThey wanted to go in another direction,β Says McDonald. βI guess my coaching style clashed with what they (The Jr. Argonauts organization) wanted. We won the games we needed to, but didnβt win all the games that we could.β
McDonald was surprised soon after Sundayβs loss with the news that he would not be back next season. βIβm not thrilled with the way that it happened,β continues McDonald. βAfter six years and a good year which ended with a playoff spot, I thought it would be handled better. But I love football and appreciate the opportunity.β
The Jr. Argos will be heading back to Peterborough in two weeks to face off against the Wolverines for a third time. Head coaching duties will most likely be given to Carlo Trentadue who is listed as the teamβs defensive coach on the roster.
