Junior Bears come up short

The Junior Bears fought hard in week 4 but simply could not match the excellent game play of the Brantford Bisons. The Junior team has struggled in their first OFC season and can’t seem to stay strong for an entire 4 quarters.

After the final whistle this weekend, the Bisons walked away with the victory. The Bears fought hard this week and kept the game very close but couldn’t seem to get the win. The final score board read Brantford 25, Bears 12.

The Bears started off extremely strong with a recovered kick off that gave them a bit of a spark early. They were then able to force Brantford to punt the ball away on their next drive. Dario Gallina made the most of this opportunity and took the punt back 65 yards for a Bears touchdown.

Unfortunately, the Bears offence could not produce the necessary points this weekend because they were playing without a few key players. They were down to their third string quarterback for the second half of the game as starter Walker Breen went down with an injury. Second string QB Simon Chaves was injured the week before and was unable to help the Bears this weekend.

The special teams continued to put points on the board for the Bears this weekend. Β Bears kicker, Liam Sthilire, booted a 20 yard field goal through the uprights, putting another 3 points on the board.

Head coach Chas Douglas tells CFC that he had a game plan set out after his QB went down. β€œWe were just hoping to keep the game close and get a good return and get us back into the game after walker went down.” He has faith in his team and knows that all of his players are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to help the squad.

Like the Senior team, the Juniors have a strong defense who always keeps the games close. They come prepared each week but seem to get run down from the amount of time they spend on the field. Coach Chas says, β€œOur defense kept us close in the game. They just ran out of gas by the fourth quarter.”

Next week the Bears hope to have all of their starters back as they welcome Twin City to their home field this Saturday. Coach Chas plans on conditioning his players this week in practice insuring both sides of the ball will be able to play hard for all four quarters.

The season is still young and the Bears have the potential to win a few crucial games as they make a push for the playoffs.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
