JV Hawkeyes announce presence, face tough test

Last weekend was the unofficial start to summer for most football families in Ontario, the May two-four weekend is the opening kickoff weekend for must summer leagues in the province and it officially ushers in the part of the year the football players live for, the balmy game days and the cool evening practices are some of the best times of the year for those who live on the gridiron.

On May 21st, the junior varsity Oshawa Hawkeyes kicked off their season at York University to play the Metro Toronto Wildcats. The Hawkeyes, donning brand new jerseys glided to a 22-0 at the home of CIS team, York Lions.

The defense was stellar throughout as each player saw significant playing time en route to a shut out performance, no easy feat for any defense on any game day, let alone the first.

The offense hummed along to an efficient 22 points led by quarterback Grant Campbell.

All in all, as far as opening weekends go, you couldn’t ask for a better one for the bird men from Oshawa, the varsity squad even held up their end of the bargain with an impressive 50-14 victory against the Wildcats.

This week, the Hawkeyes return to the friendly confines of the Oshawa Civic Satdium to host their home opener against the powerful Toronto Thunder, a team that by most accounts, packs quite a punch. Every season has its own unique anatomy with its own parts.

This Week 2 contest could be the litmus test for the Hawkeyes. They catch Toronto coming off a terrible 53-6 loss to the Myers Riders, who are in their own right, quite the club. With the Hawkeyes coming off a massive win and the Thunder coming into Oshawa after a devastating loss, the outcome is anything but guaranteed.

Oshawa must remain mentally disciplined in order not to fall into the trap game mentality, and play physical football. Toronto on the other hand, must come into the game brimming with confidence, an early score to validate the confidence would be monumental in terms of momentum.
