Minor Tiger-Cats kick off expanded season

On Friday night (Aug. 30), under the lights at MacRae Fields in Rockton, the Hamilton Wentworth Minor Football Association begins a new era in local football. After several years of competing in the Southern Ontario Football Association of Leagues (SOFAL) as the Panthers, the HWMFA will now also field teams in the Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) as the Tiger-Cats.

The name change came about as a result of a new partnership the HWMFA has with the Canadian Football League Hamilton Tiger-Cats. HWMFA added teams into the COMFL this year to provide its players with a more diversified football experience.

COMFL has committed to be a true tiered football league this year, with teams of similar skill levels competing against each other. Teams from Guelph, Brantford, Port Dover, Niagara, Vaughan, and Kitchener-Waterloo will be joining the HWMFA to play games against existing COMFL teams from Burlington, Halton Hills, Toronto, and Clarington. In total, COMFL has grown from 36 teams last year, to 46 teams this year.

The HWMFA has seven teams competing this year in Tyke, Atom, Peewee, and Bantam, ages 7-14. MacRae fields is their home park and is a football only facility with two football fields, players dressing rooms, trainers room, media booth, concessions and bleachers for fans. The teams practise during the week out of Hill Park High School. The game on Friday night sees the Peewee AA Tiger-cats meeting the Twin City Warhawks at 7:30 p.m. Admission, as always, is free. Anybody interested is seeing what minor football is all about is encouraged to attend.
