OVFL:Ā  Varsity Grenadiers win three straight and junior team still looking for a win

The senior varsity Limestone District Grenadiers gave up their first points of the season following a 14-2 victory over the Pickering Dolphins on Saturday, June 8.

Matt Pendergast led the defensive front with six solo tackles but it was Aaron Brownlee who shut the door on the Dolphins offense when they gambled on fourth-and-goal in the red zone.

Tyler Ling and Brownlee each had interceptions during the match-up. It was Brownleeā€™s interception in the end zone that kept the Grenadiers defensive record alive.

Dustin Brogaard was the runner of choice. Unfortunately he wasnā€™t able to accomplish much. Brogaard had possession of the ball for eighteen carries for a total of forty-seven yards, his longest being eleven.

Nate Kellar scored the only touchdown for the Grenadiers in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Dylan Fisher found Kellar open and threw a 30-yard pass straight up the middle. Fisher had a rough start to the game, having thrown three interceptions but finished the end of the day with nine completions in 21 attempts for a total of 142-yards.

Michael Bashall finished the rest of the scoring for the Grenadiers. Bashall was 2-for-3 on field goals.Ā  Connecting with a 33-yard and 29-yard for six points and the extra point after Fisherā€™s touchdown pass to Kellar.

Pickeringā€™s only score came from a second-half safety.

The junior Grenadiers are still winless after falling victim to the undefeated Dolphins 24-14 on Saturday. Harry Robinson led the defensive play with nine solo tackles and four assists. However the sixty-eight combines tackles, a single sack by Curtis Courneya and an interception by Hunter Stenner wasnā€™t enough to get passed the Dolphins.

Grenadiers quarterback Tanner Dejong finished the day with 11-of-21 for a total of 48-yards. Caleb Goodfellow opened the scoring for the Grenadiers with a 16-yard rush play. Dejong threw one touchdown pass to Nicholas Westendorp for eleven yards.

After a two-week stretch of away games, the Grenadiers will play at home on Saturday, June 15 at Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute against the Oshawa Hawkeyes.Ā  The juniors will seek their first victory of the season against a winless club, while the varsity Grenadiers will put their undefeated record to the test against a Hawkeyes team that is 2-1 following the junior game.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
