Mustangs end NS Spring League regular season with two shutout victories (RECAP)

The Metro Mustangs won their two last games of the Nova Scotia Spring Indoor League (Midget) to remain atop the standings.

In Saturday’s game, the Mustangs defeated the Valley Bulldogs 49-0.  On Monday, the Mustangs shutout the Dartmouth Destroyers 56-0.

As a result, the Mustangs are seeded first in the playoffs with a perfect 4-0 record, while the Halifax Argos finish the regular season in second place with a 3-1 mark.  The Timberlea Renegades end the midget season with a 2-2 mark, the Dartmouth Destroyers finish with a 1-3 record while the Valley Bulldogs end their season winless, with a 0-4 record.

This upcoming weekend, the Mustangs will face the Destroyers in the first semi-final match on Saturday May 11th, 2013 at 7:00pm at East Hants Sports Complex in Lantz.  In the other semi-final, the Argos will take on the Renegades on Sunday May 12, 2013 at 10:00am at the same venue.

METRO MUSTANGS 49, VALLEY BULLDOGS 0:

On Saturday, the Metro Mustangs blew past the Valley Bulldogs 49-0.

Kicker Colin Murney had a big game for the Mustangs as he had booted six conversions and one field goal.  He also recovered his own punt.

Quarterback Sean Muir had seven completions in 14 attempts for 106 yards, had 13 yards on five carries and one touchdown.  Running back Taylor MacDonald amassed 126 rushing yards on six carries, scored two majors, 176 all-purpose yards and had a 50 yard kick return.  Running back Tyler Robichaud (seven carries, 62 rushing yards), wide receiver Joe Doucet (four receptions, 72 yards) and wide receiver/quarterback Morgan Laws (25 yard reception, a carry on a yard) scored touchdowns for the victors.  Running back Aidan Majury (three carries, 26 yards), running back Andre Martell (2 carries, 10 yards), wide receiver Ryan Keays (20 yard reception) and wide receiver Brian Gaugh (19 yard reception) all contributed to the offensive success the Mustangs had on the field.

Defensively, Kyle MacDonald (six solo tackles, one assisted solo, one solo sack, one assisted sack) and Ben Ford (four solo tackles, one assisted solo, one sack) led the way for the Mustangs. Malcolm Hyde (six solo tackles, one assisted sack), Brad Bevan (five solo tackles, four assisted tackles), Jesse Boudreau (two solo tackles, two assisted tackles), Dustin Buchanan (interception), Will Chamberlain (four solo tackles, two assisted tackles),  Matt Bayne (four solo tackles), Tyler Robichaud (one solo tackle, one assisted tackle), Chris Young (two solo tackles), Mitchell LeBlanc (two solo tackles, one assisted tackle), Liam Morris (one solo tackle) and Andre Martell (one solo tackle) all played significant roles in the win.

“We were happy that Dartmouth and the league were able to reschedule the game tonight,” explained Mustangs head coach Greg Bayne in his postgame assessment.  “Dartmouth had some very skilled athletes playing on both sides of the ball and had Sean Muir scrambling out of the pocket.”

“We felt that Sean did a good job tonight protecting the football while under pressure and gaining some big first downs with his feet.  Running Backs Taylor MacDonald, Tyler Robichaud, Andre Martell gained some hard fought yards as well and each registered TDs.  Receiver Joe Doucet had another good game with 4 receptions and a TD.  Defensively, our Defensive line played extremely well again with Kyle MacDonald and Ben Ford getting good penetration.  Malcolm Hyde showed up with strong play on Special Teams and pressure for his Defensive End Spot getting an interception and a Sack as well as Dustin Buchanan DE who had 3 solo tackles and a sack.  LB Jess Boudreau great heads up fumble pick up for a TD.  Interceptions from Will Chamberlain and 50 yard return for a TD and an Interception from Matt Bayne as well.”

METRO MUSTANGS 56, DARTMOUTH DESTROYERS 0:

On Monday night, the Mustangs had little trouble with the Destroyers.  The Mustangs trounced the Destroyers 56-0 in a game that was rescheduled.

Quarterback Sean Muir completed seven passes for 82 yards and had five carries for 44 yards.  Running back Taylor MacDonald (12 carries for 71 rushing yards, three yard reception) scored two touchdowns while running back Tyler Robichaud (seven carries, 46 yards), running back Andre Martell (five carries, 25 yards) and wide receiver Joe Doucet  (four receptions for 61 yards) tallied single majors. Wide receivers Garett Jewers (two receptions, 24 yards) and Colin Murney (six yard reception) also contributed to the victory for the Mustangs.

Defensively, linebacker Jesse Boudreau (one solo tackle, one assisted tackle) recovered a fumble to score a 25 yard touchdown and defensive back Will Chamberlain caught an interception and scored a 50 yard touchdown.  Free safety Matt Bayne (caught an interception, one solo tackle, two assisted tackles), defensive end Malcolm Hyde  (caught an interception, one solo tackle, one assisted tackle, blocked punt), linebacker Brad Bevan (three solo tackles, one assisted tackle), defensive end Dustin Buchanan (three solo tackles, one sack), defensive tackle Ben Ford (one solo tackle, one assisted tackle), defensive tackle Kyle MacDonald (one assisted tackle), defensive back Chris Young (one assisted tackle), free safety Taylor MacDonald (one solo tackle), defensive back Gio Holmes (three solo tackles, one assisted tackle) and defensive back Jacob Barton (one solo tackle) all chipped in stop the Destroyers offense from getting anything going in the game.

Overall, the Mustangs were pleased to have the opportunity to play their opponents.
