NCAFA (Ottawa): Semi-final recap (Tyke to Bantam)

The National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) completed its Semi Finals last weekend and Championship Week kicked off at Millenium Field.  The Sullivan Cup Games have been completed but the Midget Championship goes tonight and Chorney and Gilchrist Cup games to follow over the weekend.

Tyke

It took Overtime to decide the game between the East Ottawa Generals and the Bel-Air Lions with the Generals coming out on top 46-39.  Both teams battled it out with outstanding play all around and although it was a high scoring game it was the turnovers and defense that were the difference in the end.  Mark Webb scored 7 TD’s for the Generals and other notables were Tristan Picard, Damien Mainville, Ben Kuntz, Alex Forgeron and Noah Porter-McLennan.

The Myers Riders defeated the Orleans Bengals 25-6. On offense the Riders were lead by the blocking of Vincent Roy and the catching of Isiah Moran-Weekes. The defense was led by Natale Frangione and Logan Mcgrath.

The Gloucester South Raiders sole touchdown in their win over the Brockville Buccaneers was scored by tight end Jordan Donston on a reverse. Hard-running Bradly Peters led the offense with Jacob Dugas at quarterback. The defense was led by Shane Cabral, Xaivious Vaillancourt, Cameron Bain and James MacDiarmid.

With a 59-0 win over the Gatineau Vikings, a second straight A cup championship and undefeated season is within the grasp of the Cumberland Panthers Tykes. Lead on offence by Fabrice Mukendi and Markeydean Nelson (combined 8 TDs) the Panthers scored early and often to finish off their east division rivals. The Panthers defence and special teams lead by Darious Mckenzie and Patrick Massociotte came up big once again as they have done all year and kept their shutout streak going at 9 games and counting.

Mosquito

The West Carleton Wolverines travelled to Leitrim field and beat the Gloucester South Raiders 42-29 to advance to the final. The offense was led by Hayden Tripp with 6 major scores on the day with the rest of the Wolverine points coming off the toe of Wes Sonnenberg on converts. Defensively, The Wolverines shut down the Raiders offense in the second half to preserve the win. Blake Thompson, Jamie Smith and Michael Lightbody all had strong games for the Wolverine defence.

Cumberland Panthers got off to a tough start with 1st quarter ending 24-0 in favor of the Nepean Redskins. The rest of the game changed as the Panthers earned their composure back and dominated 2nd quarter action with two touchdowns from AK Ismail and Kodey Williamson. The 3rd quarter was an action packed battle with the Panthers earning a touchdown by AK Ismail and another by Sahil Sharma. The Panthers were able to gain one more touchdown by Wesley Bailey in the final quarter. The Panthers fought hard and came back from a deficit to force and test the Redskins to earn their win with the final score 54-36 for the Nepean Redskins.

Peewee

In a tight and defensive affair, the Bel-Air Lions defeated the West Carleton Wolverines 12-7 in their semi-final matchup. The defence was led by a strong effort up front by Alex Childs and Abdul Halak while DB Nick Cunnington-Bourbonniere came up with the game winning interception return for a touchdown. The offence delivered a solid ground game thanks largely to the work of Center Ian MacLean-Evans and the rest of the offensive line who led the way for Jean Paul Cimankinda and the rushing attack.

The Bell Warriors fought one of the most exciting games of the year and came out on top of the South Ottawa Mustangs 8-6. This was a game that went down to the wire. Corey Peipers scored the Warrior’s only TD and the Warriors defense led by Andrew Beattie and Tyler Brown, stopped a two-point convert attempt to hold off the surging Mustangs to preserve their birth in next week’s A-Cup final.

Bantam

The Myers Riders defeated the Nepean Redskins 55-0 in semi-final action to advance to the championship game for the third consecutive season. Bryan Gray rushed for 3 TDs and Joey Mckiernan scored 2 TDs. Single TDs were added by Sean Edgecombe and Luke Rawling. Joseph Donnelly and Jocelyn Simard each had interceptions in a strong defensive effort for the Riders.

The North Gloucester Giants defeated a very game East Ottawa Generals crew by a score of 32-12.  Generals scoring came from Andrew Olivera who completed 2 Field Goals and Markell Keedi who returned a kick off for a TD.

The Bell Warriors Bantam team made it a clean sweep winning 56 to 35 over a dynamic South Gloucester Raiders club. In a back-and-forth battle, the Warriors scored 8 TD’s (3 TD’s Jesse Skucas, 2 TD’s Malcolm Turgeon, and single TD’s by Tyler Scott, Nate Eisner and linebacker Travis Martin) to pull out the high-scoring battle. For the Raiders, Dimitri Vaillancourt scored 4 TD’s, doing so on the ground, through the air, and on Special Teams, while Will Karam and the defence, including Mostafa Kari, JP Ayotte, Shamari Randall, Deion Banze and Ian Ferguson, fought the good fight in vain, losing to a determined Warriors team.

Midget

Friday night’s playoff semi-final between the Bel-Air Norsemen and the Kanata Knights was an exciting game with a surprising amount of offence for a game with a 18-15 scoreline. It was the Norsemen’s backfield that carried the team to a hard earned victory behind 237 yards, 16 first downs, and a touchdown for Jonathon Cimankinda and 135 yards, 5 first downs, and a touchdown for Stefano Napolitano. On the other side of the ball the defence delivered another brilliant game led by the trio of Shane Brownlee, Jesse Suchorab and Alex Hoecht who had a combined total of 11 solo tackles, 22 assisted tackles and 3 QB sacks as well as numerous key stops throughout the game.

Championship Week is one of the major highlights of the year for NCAFA but it does not signify the end of the season.  All-Star games are scheduled for Sunday November 11th at Keith Harris Stadium (Carleton University) – 12:15 pm Peewee and 2:45 pm Bantam.  Check out www.ncafa.ca for all the NCAFA action – scores – schedules – standings.
