The National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) kicked off its 59th regular season this past weekend as 58 of their 64 teams were scheduled for play.
Tyke
The East Ottawa Generals Tykes started their season with a road trip this past Sunday against the Cornwall Wildcats. Mark Webb, Max Bedard and Carson Sauve of the Generals all contributed 2 TD’s each to secure a win against the tabbies. Big tackles from Justin Villon, Emily Holmes and an interception by Noah Porter was enough to keep the Wildcats to 1 touchdown as the Generals upset the home team 37-6.
In the opening season game against the Gloucester South Raiders, the Cumberland Panthers Tyke team showed the same fighting spirit as in past years. Offensively the Panthers scored twice with runs by Dante Spadaccini and Matt Baptiste. Baptiste also completed a pass to Evan Scazighino for the extra point. The Panthers showed desire and determination with 2 fumble recoveries by Austin Leshien and a few remarkable solo tackles by Jacob Matte. The game finished 25-13 in favor of the Gloucester South Raiders. Xzaivious Vaillancourt led the Raiders offense with 3 TDs. Antonio “Wrecking Ball” Corsi added a TD and Santino Palazzolo kicked a convert. Nicholas Matouk, Foster Scrivener, Carter Mauschitz and James MacDiamid added big plays on defense which included a MacDiamid INT.
With 22 offensive plays in the game the Nepean Redskins beat the Outaouais Saints 46-6. Nepean scoring was lead by Kieran Mason who scored 2 TDs converting one with a sweep left and a second one kicking for 2 points. Touchdowns were also scored Preston Martin with 2 and 1 TD each for Keegan Bertrand and Yanis Iloki. The defence was led by Nicholas Boschetti with 5 ½ tackles and Owen Lanouette with 3 ½ tackles.
The Myers Riders Tyke team was victorious 28-0 over the Bell Warriors. The Riders were led by a strong defence and an efficient offence. The defence was led by rookies James Donnelly and Paolo Peloso with his 1st quarter interception that set up the games first TD. The offence was led by first year QB Justin Shibley and scored on 4 of their 6 possessions with TDs by Colson Chartier and Vincent Roy.
West Carleton opened the season with a 42-0 loss to the Kanata Knights. Highlights included QB Morgan Russell completing 2 passes for 15 yards to Spencer Neil, RB David Rodriguez with 40 yards rushing and Angus Herrick and Matteo Madore with 6 tackles each.

Myers Riders Mosquito’s fell 22-0 early to Bell and just fell short of completing the comeback with TDs from Max Thomson and Madison Mclean and strong defense from Matteo Milito in a 22-16 loss. Bell was led by Jake Papalia threw a TD pass to Ben Edouard-Williams who also rushed for 2 more TDs in the winning cause.
The visiting Nepean Redskins go the 2013 season underway with a 42-0 win over the Outaouais Saints. Behind a strong performance from the offensive line, Redskins QB Ryan Licandro led the way with a rushing TD of his own. The Redskins backfield dominated with rushing from Zendai Joseph and WR Daniel Falcone ran in for a score after a beautiful catch. The defense closed the door on the Saints attack thanks to Jeremie Fradette-Roy’s aggressive play. Perhaps the highlight of the game was John Furano running for a 40 yard TD after stripping the ball from the Saint’s carrier.
A run to the 2013 Championship started last Saturday when the Cumberland Panthers Mosquito team beat the Gloucester South Raiders 58-0. Led by Fabrice Mukendi and his 5 TD, 188 yard rushing performance and a 7 for 10 – 2 TD passing day from Christian Veilleux, the offence scored early and often leading 34-0 after the first quarter. The Panthers defence frustrated the Raiders all morning and only allowed one first down the whole game.
The West Carleton Wolverines were on the road in defence of their City Championship. When the dust settled the Wolverines defeated a very scrappy Kanata Knights team 24-12. Nick Porteous led the Wolverines on offense with three TDs with QB Tristan Ready rounding out the Wolverines scoring with a TD of his own. On defence the Wolverines played a stingy team defence with everyone getting in on the action. Josh Parent and Andrew Potts each got an interception for the Wolverines and Hugh Russell had an outstanding game at LB for the victors. For Kanata, Devaughn Blackwood and Jared Valentino led the offensive push with solid running drives, scoring the Knight’s 2 TD’s. Supporting the offensive drive was a strong showing form the Knights defense, putting on the pressure with four turnovers.
Peewee
Myers Riders ran through the Bell Warriors 27-7 behind strong blocking from Dan Mercier and Quasim Sadiq. Kai and Wei Du limited Bell’s offense all night.
JP Ciminkinda had some great runs and scored on the opening kickoff for the Bel-Air Lions as they went on to defeat the Brockville Buccaneers 30-0. Liam Paquette played well at QB after a very short training camp. Jamal Boyce, Connor Williams and Nick Cunnington-Bourbonniere made some great tackles on defense while Jameson Dominique had a interception with a healthy return.
The West Carleton Wolverines defeated the Kanata Knights 42-27. QB Brayden Lassenba threw 2 TD passes to Owen Clement. Hayden Tripp had over 150 yards rushing and 3 TDs. On defence, James Scott’s interception on the goal line helped preserve the victory.
Bantam
The Nepean Redskins Bantams opened their season with an impressive win over the Cornwall Wildcats. It became clear by the end of the first half that Jacob Spinella and his offensive squad had arrived to dominate, with Phil Iloki and Jalla Lansanah getting 2 TD’s each. The second half only provided more momentum for the Redskins as Lansanah returned a kickoff for another TD and Iloki also found the endzone one more time. Honarable mention goes to Sean Luscombe who was stellar on defence and blocked two attempted passes from the Wildcats offence. The final score was 45-0 for the Redskins.
In a rematch of last year’s Bantam Championship, the defending Myers Riders defeated the Bell Warriors 22-7 on the strength of 2 TDs by RB Joey McKieman. WR Malik Sauve-Mohammed had the other Riders TDs and Cartier Wilson added a FG in the victory. Defensively for the Rides, DB Maxim Lavalee made several key tackles. Warriors QB Quinn Stewart led the Warriors in yardage gained while Dylan Parry ran for the Warriors lone TD. Warrior MLB Kurtis Schaefer had 1 interception and led the Warriors with tackles and punt return yardage.
The Kanata Knights Bantam team opened their season Sunday at Bob Barr Field in Kanata, securing an impressive 27-0 victory against the West Carleton Wolverines. Knights’ veteran Aston Vanasse led the scoring with two touchdowns. Additional TDs for the Knights by Colton Brydges and Luke Morrison added to the tally. Throughout the game the Knights’ offence was strong. Michael Kraeker, Patrick Heika, Nick Ainger, Brandon Atwood, Garrett Kirk and Braiden D’Aoust ran, passed, caught and blocked, to keep the ball moving in the Knights’ favor. A blowout doesn’t happen without a strong defence. Blocking, tackling and out-running their opponents Abed Hamidi, Dylan Walker, Austin Cranney, Duncan McDonald, Cesar Becerril, Alex Polataiko, Dylan Lachance, Tristan Hubley and Will O’Brien kept the Wolverines off their game and the Knights ahead in the scoring. For the Wolverines, QB Noah Potter threw for over 100 yards, Tom Langstaff had an interception and 2 broken passes while Zack Sadler cam up with 5 tackles – 3 for losses and a QB sack.
For the Gloucester South Raiders, Daniel Obiang scored a TD on a 70 yard kick return while Nick Russo and Ali Diya stood on defense with some key tackles and big hits in a frustrating 29-7 loss to the Cumberland Panthers. Leading the Panthers offensive attack was Kurleigh Gittens Jr who scored all 4 TDs. Jayden Kassis chipped in with a FG and 2 XPs.
