Northern Saskatchewan Football has kicked off its fifth season this week with two games being played while two others were postponed due to wildfires.

The first game of the season on September 6, saw the Pinehouse Lakers travel to Beauval to take on the Voyageurs. Pinehouseā€™s Dray Tinker wasted little time in getting his Lakers on the board with a touchdown on the teamā€™s first play of the game. Both Tinker and James Misponas scored three touuchdowns each in the game. In response for Beauval, Hilliard Roy scored two touchdowns while Deagan Iron and Cory Lafleur each added another but it wasnā€™t enough as Pinehouse won the game by a score of 38-28.

Two six aside games were postponed to a later date as a result of the wildfires in north eastern Saskatchewan. The Creighton Kodiaks were to travel on September 6 to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band to take on the Senator Myles Venne Huskies. The Cumberland House Islanders were to play the Sandy Bay T-Wolves on September 7.

On Friday, September 8, the La Ronge Churchill Chargers travelled to Tisdale to take on the Tornados. This was the first ever 9-aside game for the Chargers. Tisdale jumped out to an early lead but La Ronge stayed with them. Tisdale led at halftime by a score of 13-12. In the third quarter, excellent defensive play by La Ronge and in particular Tim Zelensky and Joseph Ratt, prevented Tisdale from moving the ball or scoring for the rest of the game. Broken plays and turnovers resulted in excellent field position for the La Ronge offense. Jacob Glover played very well at quarterback after missing most of the last season due to injury. Running back Frithz Culig led the Chargers with two touchdowns as they went on to win the game by a score of 31-13.

Looking ahead at week two of Northern Saskatchewan Football action, the Cumberland House Islanders will travel to Pinehouse on Wednesday. On Thursday, two games will be held. The first game will see the Creighton Kodiaks host the Sandy Bay T-Wolves. This game may be postponed due to widlfires. The second game will have Beauval travel to Senator Myles Venne. On Friday, the Tisdale Tornados travel to La Ronge. Good luck and safe travels to all teams.
