Halifax Seahawks 41, Dartmouth Destroyers 36:

On Friday evening at Huskies Stadium, the Halifax Seahawks bounced back to register a win.  This was impressive considering they had to fight off a late fourth quarter comeback attempt by the Dartmouth Destroyers.   However, the comeback fell short.

“The key to victory was our offensive line and their ability to really open up our running game,” comments the Seahawks co-head coach after the victory.  “We had great drive from our guys up front on some of our plays and we were able to consistently move the chains and keep drives alive.”

“Our defense had highs and lows but at the end of the day, they made the important stops when we needed them and allowed us to seal the victory.”

Offensively for the Seahawks, Ryan Kublek led the way with 205 rushing yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns in the game.  Moreover, running back Bradley Petrie racked up 105 rushing yards on 12 carries while receiver Drew MacIsaac accumulated 80 yards on four carries and found the end zone once.

“Ryan Kublek and Bradley Petrie made some great runs behind our guys up front,” adds the Seahawks co-head coach.   “Drew MacIsaac and Andray Brady made some big plays down the stretch for our receiving core.”

Defensively, there were two Seahawks players in particular that came up big in the victory.

“Spencer Bennett and Eric Bowdridge really stood out on defense,” says the Seahawks co-head coach.  “They were both flying around and cleaning up on a lot of plays.”

With this victory, the Seahawks move into a tie for second place in the league standings with a 2-1 record.   Meanwhile, the Destroyers have yet to register a win and are basement dwellers in the with a 0-3 record.

The Seahawks co-head coach ays he was impressed with how the Seahawks showed resiliency throughout the entire game.

“I was impressed overall by our ability to respond to adversity as a team,” explains the Seahawks co-head coach.  “The game was back and forth and it was really important for us that we kept our focus and never let up.”

Going forward, the Seahawks need to improve on a couple of key aspects of their game if they are to enjoy more success this season.

“If we can’t find some more consistency in our passing game and our ability to defend the pass we are going to struggle,” says the Seahawks co-head coach in his postgame assessment.   “It is definitely an area of focus moving forward.”

As for the Destroyers, quarterback Nate Skeete amassed 290 passing yards and threw three touchdowns overall on the day (including a 60 yard rushing score).  Additionally, the pivot was good on three two point conversion attempts.

Running back Travis Stanfield accumulated 90 rushing yards and a two point conversion while running back Isaiah Simmons also had 90 rushing yards and scored a major.   Receiver Spencer Wiechert amassed 140 receiving yards, found the end zone twice and had a two point conversion.   Destroyers receiver Joey Wedsworth scored one touchdown and collected 100 receiving yards while Mike Wedsworth chipped in with 40 receiving yards and a two point conversion.

Destroyers head coach Randy Rudel says that in spite of the loss, the team had its best outing of the season on Friday.   In particular, the offensive unit improved immensely.

“Offensively, we were able to move the ball,” summarizes Rudel of his postgame assessment.    “Our running game finally got going; the offensive line really came to play today and that helped our passing game open up a bit.”

“Spencer (Wiechert) made some unbelievable catches and both running backs and quarterbacks ran for some tough yards that got us a fist down to keep key drives going.”

One weakness for the Destroyers has been their defensive game.   They hope to improve on that in the weeks ahead.

“I think we ran out of gas a bit defensively,” comments the Destroyers head coach.   “We couldn’t seem to stop them when we need to that one more time.”

“I think we need to work on being more aggressive and attack more because there was too much waiting back and then attack, which is too late.”

For his part, the Seahawks co-head coach says the Destroyers were formidable opponents and is anticipating their next meeting.

“Dartmouth was a very good football team,” says the Seahawks co-head coach.  “They are winless but that won’t last very long and I’m sure we will have another great game with them the next time we meet.”

However, the focus shifts to their next opponent.   Next weekend, the Seahawks have a tough task at hand as they face the league leading Metro Mustangs.   The Mustangs will be well rested from their bye this past week.   Not only are the Mustangs atop of the league standings, but they have only surrendered eight points in three games.

The Seahawks hope to come prepared next weekend.

“We have Metro coming up this week,” comments the Seahawks co-head coach.  “They have a lot of talent and we are going to need to game-plan accordingly.”

Under Friday Night Lights at Saint Mary’s Huskies Stadium, the Timberlea Renegades won their second straight game over Team Nova Scotia.

“It was a game of two halves for us,” explains Renegades assistant coach David Rent in his postgame comments.  “The first two quarters, we executed our plays and game plan, but during the second half, we were slow to adjust to the changes Nova Scotia made and as a result our production on offense and defense was down.”

The key to victory was the production from both Renegades units on the field.

“I would like to acknowledge the offensive and defensive line for the Renegades because they are the unsung heroes,” summarizes Rent in his postgame assessment.    “If not for them doingt heir job and doing it effectively, it would have been a long night.”

David Nisbet led the Renegades offensive unit with 78 yards on two receptions, 44 rushing yards on four carries and scored two touchdowns.   Slotback Nate Rostek chipped in with 51 yards on two receptions and scored a major. Renegades speed back Hayden Clarke contributed to the victory with 87 rushing yards on seven carries.

“His plays were timely and lifted the morale of the team each time he touched the ball.”

With this win, the Renegades move into a second place tie in the league standings with a 2-1 record.   Meanwhile, Team Nova Scotia slides into third place after the loss with a 1-3 record.

As for Team Nova Scotia, Greg Hutchins kicked a single on a missed field goal but was good on a conversion attempt.   During the game, Cameron Davidson scored a touchdown on a two yard run while quarterback Duncan Patterson threw a 70 yard touchdown pass to Nick Green.   Additionally, Patterson threw a touchdown pass and an interception.   Defensively, the team had one fumble recovery.

Overall, Team Nova Scotia head Chris Valardo says the team made major strides in spite of the loss.

“Our offense played much better this week throwing for over 200 yards passing and we were able to get outside with a lot more success this week,” comments Valardo.   “Our offensive line was vastly improved this week against a very strong defense.”

“Our defense was very consistent and played very tough.   They played very well against a very tough opponent.”

Improvement will be a key focus in the coming weeks for the Team Nova Scotia squad.

“We continue to improve and we were much better last night than we were last week,” adds the Team Nova Scotia head coach.

Meanwhile, the Renegades need to focus on improving on their mental toughness.

“During the game we had some mental breakdowns, so for the next few practices we will work on the basics and focus on getting players comfortable with the systems we have and ensure they are in a position to succeed,” says Rent.

The Renegades look to win their third straight game when they face the Dartmouth Destroyers on Saturday May 20th at Saint Mary’s Huskies Stadium.  Game time is 11:30am.   As for Team Nova Scotia, they will have a bye this upcoming week.
