OFC JV: Howard leads the Stamps’ to victory over the Preds’

The Burlington Stampeders have one of the best junior varsity squads in the province of Ontario and the Twin Cities Predators found out why. A stifling defence, run-oriented offense, and solid special teams continue to be the formula for success of the junior varsity squad from Burlington.

The game started perfectly for the home squad. After the defense forced a 3 and out the offense went to work right away. The stamps’ ran down the field, culminating in a Jonathan Howard 37 yard touchdown run. Howard may be the niftiest and most elusive back in Ontario in his age group. After the convert by Adam McIntosh, the stamps went up 7 to 0.

One of McIntosh’s strength’s is his kicking accuracy, and he showed this off with many well placed kicks on the kick off team. His first was a pooch kick into a spot where no predator players were. The result was the stampeders recovering the football and scrimmaging on the Preds’ 33 yard line. And one play later, Howard had his second 30+ yard touchdown of the day. Before half the crowd had sat in their seats the Stamps’ lead 14 to 0.

The next kick off was a ‘squib’ kick and it again gave the Predator return team some troubles, but this time they did recover. Unfortunately for the Preds’ a few plays later the Stampeders #92 Kyle Hallett (picture) intercepted a screen pass deep in their territory and gave the Stamps’ offense great field position again. After a first down run & facemask penalty the Stamps’ scrimmaged from the Predator one yard line and this time QB Troy Downton called his own number and scored on a QB sweep.

The next kick off was another adventure for the Predators as McIntosh out kicked the returners who picked the ball up in their own end zone and returned it to their one yard line. After the defense forced the Predators to punt the Stampeder offense once again capitalized on great field position and this time fullback Jake Lavigne scored the TD giving the Stampeders a 28 to 0 lead that would carry through the end of the first quarter…all before the Predators gained their first first down of the game and before the first punt by the Stampeders.

Things did not get any easier for the Predators when they lost starting QB Addie Cober to a leg injury late in the first quarter. The perfect storm it seemed.

With 2:35 left in the opening half and unidentified Predator player was injured and had to be carted off in an Ambulance. We wish him a speedy recovery.

The rest of the game saw some positive plays on both sides of the ball. Howard scored his 3rd and fourth touchdowns of the game and the Predators managed a field goal in the 3rd quarter. Final score was 42 to 3 for the hometeam.
