OFC: JV Sturgeon stomp Stallions to finish regular season at 7-1

On Sunday July 22ndΒ the Sarnia Sturgeon defeated the Huronia Stallions by a blowout score of 55-14.

Sarnia Sturgeon quarterback Josh Elsley threw four touchdown passes in the game to four different players. Three of his four touchdown passes came in the first quarter.Β Β The first coming to Ramon β€œbutter” Bustillo for a forty yard touchdown. The second touchdown pass going to the ever improving fullback Yenel Olivero for a forty yard touchdown once again. Elsley’s third and final touchdown pass went to Erich Maxfield from thirty five yards out. Sarnia also scored another touchdown when Mitchell Smiley scored from thirty yards out. Smiley also got in on the action on defense in the first quarter when he intercepted a pass. Middle linebacker Mason Kett also got in on the action when he picked off a pass in the first quarter as well.

The Huronia Stallions got on the board in the first quarter as well when Matthew Howe returned a kickoff for a one hundred yard touchdown. Unfortunately for the Stallions this score would be the first that they would be able to get for three quarters of the game.

The second quarter was all Sturgeon. They struck again on offense when they ran a trick play in which their center Dale Bresette scored a touchdown from thirty yards out. The drive was also highlighted by the tough running of Olivero, especially when he broke a counter play for a fifty yard gain.

Elsley three his fourth and final touchdown pass in the second quarter when he connected with Smiley for a forty yard touchdown pass. The half came to an end with the Sturgeon ahead by a score of 40-7.

The remainder of the Sturgeon’s points were scored when a kick from Mason Kett when through the end zone for a single point. Olivero scored on a thirty four yard run and Smiley also scored on a fifty yard run. Blake Maxfield also got an interception for the Sturgeon defense in the second half as well.

Despite being shut down the Stallions scored a touchdown on the final play of the game when quarterback Caleb Nunes connected with Dyian Beck for a touchdown.

Once again the final score was 55-14 in favour of the Sturgeon.

The Sturgeon will host a first round playoff game as they finished second in the their respective division. They will rematch for the Forest City Thunderbirds a team that they beat in the regular season by a score of 51-19.
Despite winning in the regular season by such a wide margin the Sturgeon know that the playoffs are always a different story and they are not taking the Thunderbirds lightly.

β€œWere welcoming Forrest City to come down,” says Sturgeon head coach Steve Belrose who knows the intensity that the playoffs bring to the table.

The first round playoff game is set for Friday July 27thΒ at 8:30 under the lights at Norm Perry Park.
