OFC: Peterborough Wolverines out to prove themelves in inaugural year in league (PREVIEW)

The Peterborough Wolverines are looking forward to their first season of varsity football in the OFC. The club has grown rapidly and become one of the dominant programs in Ontario. Although this is the first year for the varsity team,Β the organization hasΒ high expectations due to the success and hype surrounding their bantam and junior varsity programs. After the bantam Wolverines won their division in their first year the bar for the organization has been set high and the varsity Wolverines are no exception, they are expecting to play hard and win games this year.

Ted Brown will be taking the reins as head coach of the varsity Wolverines for their inaugural year. Brown coached the junior team last year and is already familiar with returning players and they know his systems, making the transition from junior to varsity much easier for players. Also, Brown has surrounded himself with exceptional coaches with experience in the CFL and CIS who are committed to developing players and winning games.

WolverineΒ players are committed to putting in time at the gym and practises and the coaching staff is supporting them all the way. At their first tryout, the team had an impressive turnout of 93 players. Many of the players have experience in the OVFL or OFC (including many who were coached by Brown in junior varsity) and some players have committed to universities including Guelph, St. Mary’s, Ottawa and McMaster. We can expect impressive things on the field from this talented group of players if they can manage to put it all together as a team before the season kicks off.

The first game will test the young team and could be a great opportunity to prove themselves as a top-tiered team in the OFC. The Wolverines will have to travel to play a very strong Sudbury Gladiator team, who was undefeated last year in the regular season and ranked first in the division the previous year. Β Regardless of the outcome, it should be a great game for the Wolverines and set the tempo for the season.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
