OFC: Stallions play best game of season, miss playoffs for first time since 2010

VARSITY

The Huronia Stallions Varsity football team defeated the North Halton Crimson Tide 46-39 to finish the season with a 4-4 record.  The Stallions failed to make the playoffs for the first time since they moved to the OFC in 2011 because Sudbury holds the tie-breaker between the two clubs.  The Stallions lost two games this year by a total of 12 points and had the ball driving in both contests.  The offence was guided by the strong play of Quarterback Brandon Hyrncek who completed 13 passes on 23 attempts for 326 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  Nick Stadnyk finished a terrific Varsity career with six receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown.  Wide Receiver Cruz Beaudry had his best game of the season with three receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns.  The rushing attack was led by Devin McGuirk who carried the ball 22 times for 135 yards and a touchdown.  McGuirk has a shot for the League rushing title pending this weekend’s results.  McGuirk is also the team’s Kicker and connected on two field goals on three attempts.  Zachary Kuhn punched in a one yard run to round out the scoring.  The Stallions offensive line, which had no reserve players, really came together under the expert tutelage of long time Offensive Line Coach Jeff Hale.  The defence was led by Linebacker Datun Aketepe who had a stellar final game in a Stallions uniform.  Atekepe had 11 total tackles and two Quarterback sacks.  Rookie Linebacker Charlie Doering had seven total tackles and a fumble recovery, and Linebacker Braden Butcher had six total tackles and a Quarterback sack.  Defensive Backs Joe Peters and Christian Hutter-Coppin had interceptions to conclude the defensive highlights.  The Stallions would like to commend Mitch Stadnyk and Charlie Doering for playing up at the Varsity level the entire season despite being Junior Varsity age.  Both were key contributors this season.  The club would also like to extend a big thank you to the seven graduating players all of whom are continuing the strong Stallions tradition of participation in Canadian university football.  The following are the graduating players and their respective schools: Nick Stadnyk (University of Toronto), James Ayers, Devin McGuirk and Tyler Maher (University of Waterloo), Connor Paquette (Dalhousie University), Datun Aketepe (University of Guelph), and Mike McKean (St. Mary’s University).

JUNIOR VARSITY

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity team improved to 6-1 on the season and clinched home field advantage in the Northern Conference Playoffs with a 20-8 victory over the North Halton Crimson Tide.  The Stallions controlled the game with their rushing attack with Dustin Pearson and Justin Janicki each registering rushing touchdowns.  The Stallions also had a great game on Special Teams with outstanding coverage on punts and with two made field goals by all-purpose kicker Mike Tomczyk.  The Stallions conclude the regular season this Sunday at 5pm at the Barrie Sports Complex in Midhurst against the 0-7 Toronto Junior Argos.

BANTAM

The Huronia Stallions Bantam team fell to 3-4 on the season with a 21-8 loss to the North Halton Crimson Tide.  The loss throws the Stallions playoff aspirations into uncertainty as they currently sit tied for third in the Conference in a log jam with four other teams with identical 3-4 records.  The Stallions host the 0-7 Toronto Junior Argos this Sunday at 1pm at the Barrie Sports Complex in Midhurst needing a win and the right combination of tie breakers.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
