Shawn Charles’ career got off to a rocky start five years ago when he got cut from all the teams he tried out for, which fed his ambition to try even harder and got to the next level.

The following year, he made the South Ottawa Mustangs and still plays with the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA), but he did not see much field time.

This motivated the offensive linebacker to push and train over the summer to become better. Shawn changed his mindset to be more prepared with football and became what other people say is a “great linebacker” to help him make it far in the sport.

During the offseason the Mustangs standout plays rugby to stay fresh at hitting and to stay ready for football.

At this year’s Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC), Shawn is seeking some recognition.

“My goals for the Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) are for people to notice me and for me to show people that I have what it takes to become a great player,” said Shawn, who also has a goal to make the #CFC100 list.

Moreover, his idol is Ray Lewis because he hit so hard that it made everyone stop and look at him, which is a skill Shawn hopes to have one day.

“I love football because it was my dad’s passion and then became mine,” commented the Mustangs standout. “And I just love being on the field.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
