OVFL GAME PREVIEW: Time is now for Hawkeyes

Two weeks ago spirits were high in Oshawa.

Both the junior and senior teams were coming off of impressive wins to open the season. The junior varsity team even held their opponent totally scoreless, posting a shut out for their season opener.

However, since those impressive wins, both the junior and senior teams have failed to sustain the success and level of play from their week one wins.

Both teams now sit at 1-2 which, for teams who fancied themselves playoff contenders, is not good enough.

There is a lot of time left in the season though and plenty of time to rebound from a rocky start to the season, but for either Hawkeye team, junior or senior, the time to step up is now.

The senior team should have their hands full this Saturday when they play an undefeated York Region Lions squad who will be looking to hold their grip on second place, behind Ottawa Myers Riders.

The senior Hawkeyes will have to put whatever has been bothering them aside and return to the form of week one, which saw the Oshawa squad dismantle the Toronto-Metro Wildcats 50-14.

An upset of an undefeated team will certainly give the Hawkeyes the confidence and momentum they’ll surely need if they plan to up-end the powerhouse Ottawa-Meyers Riders two weeks from now in Ottawa.

As for the junior team, they are granted somewhat of a reprieve, playing a likewise 1-2 Lions squad that will certainly be hungry to get back to the .500 plateau.

For the junior team, success seems to lie with the offense. On the first play of a week two loss, the Hawkeyes lost quarterback Grant Campbell for the game and subsequently lost. Last week their offense was held totally off the board in a 26-2 loss.

If the offense can gain some traction and the defense holds up their end of the bargain, perhaps the Hawkeyes can get back to .500 with some swagger in their step when they travel to Ottawa two weeks from now, hopefully in the playoff picture.

The Hawkeyes can still be playoff teams. However, the writing is on the wall; the time has to be now.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
