OVFL: Hamilton Ironmen put down the Brampton Bulldogs

This past Sunday afternoon, the Hamilton Ironmen prepared for their game against the Brampton Bulldogs with a little more excitement than usual. This game would mark the last time that the Ironmen would play on the turf of historic Ivor Wynne Stadium. The Ironmen took advantage of home field and cruised to a 37-18 win over Brampton.

Just a little closer…Hamilton WR Jordan Brucculeri reaches for the ball.

Quarterback Alex Hill played another excellent game throwing for four touchdowns, including two to budding wide receiver Daniel Petermann. Hill did a good job spreading the ball around, also hitting wideouts Adam Felinczak and Lucas Mancini for majors.

While Hill got all his receivers involved early, it was clear that Petermann was his favourite target. Hill found Petermann from 13 yards out as the third quarter was winding down and the two later connected on an 85-yard catch and run midway through the fourth.

After completing the pass, which would mark the Ironmen’s longest play from scrimmage this season, Coach Rob Underhill decided it was time to give Hill a much-deserved break. Backup quarterback Kyle VanWynsberghe came off the bench in the fourth quarter to hook up with Adam Felinczak for a three-yard touchdown pass, Felinczak’s second of the game.

Kicker Domenic Bellardini rounded out the scoring with a 19-yard field goal.

Coach Underhill was obviously pleased with another all-around team effort from his boys and was impressed with the way that his team persevered after a scoreless first quarter.

“I’m happy that we were able to compete with Brampton,” said Underhill, “they’re one of the most athletic teams in the league with big play potential.”

Unfortunately for Brampton, the big plays were few and far between on Sunday. The Bulldogs’ offense managed only two rushing majors off of one-yard and three-yard runs from running backs Gideon Amoah and Christopher Reid.

The Ironmen defense was solid as steel once again, forcing turnovers and making big plays. Defensive backs Anthony Trabucco, Lucas Brenton and Anthony Pizzuti each snagged an interception for the Ironmen while emerging DB Jeremy Kyei blocked three Brampton converts.

Another week, another win for the Ironmen who improved to 3-0. While Coach Underhill was content with the win, don’t think for a second that he’s over the moon just yet.

“I am satisfied with the win,” stated the coach, “however we realize that we need to get back to the basics with certain fundamentals. We need to execute better before we can truly move forward.”

Moving forward is something that the Ironmen will have to do if they expect to dull the Spears this week in Niagara. The Spears have been sharp at home since losing their opener on the road against Mississauga. Since the week one loss, Niagara has won two straight, outscoring their opponents a combined 90-3.

Hamilton will travel to Niagara for what should be an offensive showdown Friday night at Kiwanis Field. Game time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
