OVFL (JV): Grenadiers lose late battle against Panthers

For the second week in a row, the junior Limestone District Grenadiers have dropped more than a double point decision in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).

This past weekend, they suffered the wrath of the Cumberland Panthers. In week one, they fell 38-15 to Ottawa Myers Riders. Both games were with home field advantage.

Coming up on halftime, the Grenadiers tied the game with two touchdowns each after quarterback Brendan Steele connected with Jacob Magee on an 18-yard pass. The Panthers didnā€™t waste anytime responding with another six points of their of their own on the next series following the kick-off.

To start the second half, the Grenadiers received but were unable to get anything started going three-and-out. The ball switched offensive lines a couple of times after the break, both teams taking their turn at going three-and-out after the break. The Grenadiers felt the brunt of the pressure, when kicker Chad Stymest fumbled the ball when receiving for a punt and was taken down inside their own twenty.

The Grenadiers gave up four more touchdowns in the second half of the game to lose the battle 41-14, dropping them to 0-2 in the season.

Steele, from Frontenac Secondary School Falcons, completed 10 of 21 passes for 107 yards, his longest being 28-yards. Steele also threw for one touchdown. The ball was spread around to five separate players, Magee having two for 32 yards and Hayden Eaton with 28 yards.

On the other side of the ball, defensive back Damon Fair hoisted six unassisted tackles, helping with one other. Other defensive starts included William Keneford, Brandon Bearisto, and Mitch Karel. Keneford had the only interception for the Grens.

The Grenadiers travel to Pickering this coming Saturday where they will go head-to-head against the unbeaten Dolphins (2-0).

Despite trailing at one point, the senior Grenadiers upset the Panthers 25-12 to even their season at 1-1. The senior squad will also be in Pickering this coming weekend where they too will also play an unbeaten crew.

The bantam Grenadiers (0-2) are also headed to Pickering to pound the grid iron against yet another unbeaten lineup.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
