OVFL: JV Lions “expect to win a championship” (PREVIEW)

The Cambridge Lions Junior Varsity team is in full force as they are preparing to take the field with high velocity.

LeadingΒ the team out onto the field will be returning Head Coach Gary Skalos.

Skalos’ expectations are to improve on last year’s record.

β€œI expect to win a championship,” said Skalos.

For Skalos, this is the next step for a lion squad that has appeared in their conference game in the last three seasons, as Skalos is looking to help guide his team β€˜get over the hump’ and into the championship game.

However, The Lions roster this year boasts a long list of key returning players; which include an all star offensive linemen Nathan Monk, as well as all star safety turned quarterback Mitch Weiler, additionally look for running back Alex Salytchev to be making an impact on offensive side of the ball.

While on the defensive side, defensive captain middle linebacker Brayden Ralph, defensive tackle Jordan Burrell, outside linebacker Tyden Kelly, and Safety Danyel Sipes look to continue being integral pieces of this Lion’s squad.

Key rookies joining the Lions ready to make big contributions this upcoming season include running back Brandon Metz, offensive linemen Jake Sarmazian, and defensive linemen Aaron Hoyt.

Skalos notes that his season the team boasts a lot of assets.

β€œAbsolutely, a lot of our depth is in our cross over players,” said Skalos

β€œOverall teams speed,” said Skalos it’s, β€œfast at every level, we run a lot of no huddle with a lot of formations and we expect a lot out of our offensive linemen.”

As well as, the lion’s offense plan to showcase a new addition from their playbook this season.

β€œDesigned an entirely new offensive scheme and plan to launch it on Saturday,” noted Skalos.

For Skalos, who is also the offensive coordinator, he predicts it will be very effective.

β€œI expect to wax the floor with a few teams,” explained Skalos

The only real challenge the Lions may have is trying to utilize every weapon they have at their disposal.

“So many elite players but there is only one football,” said Skalos.

However, with an experienced coaching staff and players that are team oriented, this is could be one of the Lions greatest assets.

Having enjoyed a lot of success as a franchise, the 2013 season will be an interesting, yet exciting time to be a Lion. The Lions open up their inaugural season against the Oshawa Hawkeyes, on May 25th at 8pm at home.

β€œGreat way to kick off the season,” said Skalos, β€œJust open the cage doors and let them go!”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
