OVFL JV: Metro Toronto Wildcats, bigger and stronger than ever

The Junior Varsity Metro Toronto Wildcats are looking to improve on last year’s 4-4 record in 2013. The popular team from Toronto finished in 9th place in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) in 2012 but was still able to make the playoffs.

Head Coach Ed Babin, who took over the team only one year ago, has been able to reinvigorate the program at the JV level. “We want to improve on last year, make the playoffs and hopefully win our conference this year”, says Babin.

With over 60 players on the roster, the Wildcats will have many starters to choose from come game day. The majority of starters will be in grade 10 this year, adding experience and depth to the field.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they are losing star receiver Trivel Pinto who will be playing varsity this season. “There is no one like him”, Says Babin. “We will miss him this year, but we have several strong receivers including Esson Hamilton, Blair Oelke and Ray Martinez to fill his shoes.” It’s not just receivers that should be able to put on a good show come opening day. Running back Gordie Whyte from St. Michael’s College as made a good impression among the coaches and will be a go to runner this season.

Returning quarterback Jack Vernon will lead the Wildcats once again. “He will be our focal point for the offense this year. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the country and we are excited to have him back.”

Babin is not only optimistic about his offense, but his defense as well. Last year’s defensive star Deshawn Stevens will be returning for another year. Stevens boasted 70 tackles and five interceptions as the league’s best linebacker and will hopefully produce similar numbers this year. “Deshawn is one of the best in the country. He is big, strong and a great leader,” says Babin. Alongside him will be linebackers Jesse Amaral who was a Bantam All-Star and Fernando Fuller. With all three over 6 feet and 200 pounds, expect these linebackers to dominate the field.

“Where we have improved most is in the defensive backfield,” says Babin. With 5 potential All-Stars on the team, you can easily see why. The backfield will include Northern’s top safety Jerrome Ogen Rwot, Lawrence Park defensive MVP Luc Babin, and two stars from Downsview Daiquane Buchanan and Andre Atkinson. Last but not least, Henrique Custodio is sure to be a defensive end to watch as well.

In spite of having great confidence in his players, Babin is quick to point out that, “nothing matters until you get on the field.” The Wildcats are in one of the most competitive and strong leagues in the country and will surely meet many challenges over the course of the regular season.

The Wildcats will play their first game Saturday at Birchmount Stadium at 3:00PM as they will take on North Bay.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
