OVFL & OFC (JV) Week 3 Recap: Harris reigns and Balthazar strikes often

Another week is in the books for both the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and Ontario Football Conference (OFC).

Four teams remain undefeated after Week 3 action in the OVFL – Cumberland Panthers, Cambridge Lions, Mississauga Warriors and Scarborough Thunder.

Other winners this past weekend include the London Jr Mustangs, Etobicoke Eagles, Kingston Grenadiers, York Simcoe Bucs and Brampton Bulldogs.

Meanwhile, Sudbury Gladiators, Peterborough Wolverines, Toronto Jr. Argonauts, Burlington Stampeders, Brantford Bisons and Guelph Gryphons were among the winners this past weekend.

LDN JR Mustangs

LONDON JR MUSTANGS 32, NIAGARA SPEARS 29:

At Kiwanis Field, the London Jr Mustangs edged the Niagara Spears 32-29.

Ben Schmidt completed 18 passes in 26 attempts for 339 passing yards and two passing touchdowns for the victors.

Cody Fisher caught an interception and ran it into the end zone for 36 yard major. He also added a solo and an assisted tackle. Thomas Hawkins added four PAT’s and had 138 yards on six receptions (average of 23 yards per reception).

Austin Allen-Carruthers racked up 111 receiving yards for the Mustangs.

As for the Spears, Michael Casciano tallied two majors and amassed 106 yards on six receptions (average of 17.7 yards per reception).Β  Denver Jones completed nine passes in 21 attempts for 171 passing yards and two passing touchdowns.

Teddy Marshall led the Spears defense with four solo and eight assisted tackles.Β  Additionally, he recorded one solo and one assisted sack in the loss.

JV Toronto Thunder

SCARBOROUGH THUNDER 42, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 27:

At Mary Ward, Raign Harris tallied four majors and amassed 155 yards on seven receptions as the Scarborough Thunder coasted to a 42-27 victory over the Metro Toronto Wildcats.

Daniel Adeboboye also scored a touchdown and had 109 yards on three receptions (average of 36.3 yards per reception) in the victory. Connor Smith completed 18 passes in 26 attempts for 442 yards and five passing touchdowns to spearhead the Thunder offensive unit.Β  Shedler Fervius was successful on four conversion attempts.

Jeremiah Marriott led the Thunder defense with two solo and eight assisted tackles.Β  Additionally, he recorded a solo and an assisted tackle.

As for the Wildcats, Brandon Inniss tallied a major and rushed for 164 yards on nine carries (average of 18.2 yards per carry). Jesse Amaral caught an interception as well as registered four solo and nine assisted tackles in the loss.

Cumberland Panthers

CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 58, MARKHAM RAIDERS 12:

At Millennium Field, Baxter Balthazar scored three touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards on six carries as the Cumberland Panthers cruised to a 58-12 win over the Markham Raiders.

Nick Renaud tallied two majors and had 142 yards on six receptions (average of 23.7 yards per reception).Β  Connor McMahon also scored two touchdowns and rushed for 137 yards on four carries (average of 34.2 yards per carry). Alexander Lawrie also had a touchdown reception and had 101 receiving yards on three catches (average of 33.7 yards per reception).

MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 54, ESSEX RAVENS 29:

At Villanova Field, Brandon Metz tallied two majors and rushed for 150 yards on 20 carries as the Mississauga Warriors defeated the Essex Ravens 54-29.

Sean Paquette added five PAT’s for the Warriors.Β  Pivot Alexander Lavric completed 15 passes in 20 attempts for 213 yards and three touchdowns.

Jamoy Thompson caught two interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown score) and registered three solo and one assisted tackle.Β  Justinkyle Jodhan registered eight solo and five assisted tackles.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 46, HALTON COWBOYS 0:

At Jacob Hespeler Field, Devante Hudson (107 yards on four receptions) and Griffin Monaghan (101 yards on five receptions) each scored two touchdowns as the Cambridge Lions earned a 46-0 shutout victory over the Halton Cowboys.

Pivot Jackson White completed 14 passes in 22 attempts for 257 yards and five passing touchdowns for the Lions.Β  Nathan McLean added a 13 yard field goal and six PAT’s in the win.

On defense, Malex Cameron registered nine solo and three assisted tackles for the Lions.

ETOBICOKE EAGLES 29, SSM SABRECATS 15:

At Rocky DiPietro Field, Justice Allin tallied a major and rushed for 276 yards on 35 carries as the Etobicoke Eagles defeated the Sault Ste Marie (SSM) Sabrecats 29-15.

Liam Murphy added a PAT.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 31, AJAX-PICKERING DOLPHINS 28:

At Kinsmen Park, Tyler Cancian 124 yards on 16 carries) and Connor Allan (148 yards on 29 carries) each scored a touchdown as the Kingston Grenadiers got by the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins 31-28.

Brendan Steele completed 14 passes in 24 attempts for 181 yards and a touchdown for the Grenadiers.Β  Nikolas Daniele added a 29 yard field goal and a PAT.

York Simcoe Bucs

YORK SIMCOE BUCS 49, OSHAWA HAWKEYES 0:

At St. Maximillian Kolbe High School, Tristan Kuchar (158 yards on 13 carries) and Michael StrumosΒ  (115 yards on nine carries) each tallied a major as the York Simcoe Bucs earned a shutout victory over the Oshawa Hawkeyes 49-0.

Pivot Michael Bazzo completed five passes in seven attempts and added six PAT’s for the Bucs.

BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 39, HAMILTON IRONMEN 27:

At McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium, the Brampton Bulldogs scored a 39-27 win over the Hamilton Ironmen.

Zeke Magaritis tallied a major and had 105 yards six receptions (average of 17.5 yards per reception) for the Ironmen.Β  Isaiah Thomas scored on a 92 yard touchdown return.

Alexander DiPietro completed 21 passes in 39 attempts for 214 yards and two passing touchdowns in the loss.Β  David Benedetti was successful on three conversion attempts.

As for the Ironmen defense, Brody Doherty registered seven solo and five assisted tackles.Β  Joe O’Brien caught an interception and added five solo and five assisted tackles. Sebastian Paciocco had five solo and three assisted tackles.

Patrick Pearson scored two touchdowns as the Peterborough Wolverines edged the Oakville Titans 48-36.

Spencer Johnston, Alex Lew, Mac Rider, Brad Deal and Kyle Lavergne each tallied a major. Β Shamus Drumm was successful on four conversion attempts.

GUELPH BEARS 38, CHATHAM KENT COUGARS 8:

This past weekend, the Guelph Bears cruised to a 38-8 win over the Chatham-Kent Cougars.
For the Cougars, Kelton Evans completed 11 passes in 22 attempts for 174 yards and a 56 yard touchdown pass to Jake Anderson
Jake Anderson Additionally, Anderson had 2 catches for 80 yards whileΒ Nolan Ball had 5 catches for 58 yards andΒ Desi Rush had 1 catch for 35 yards.
Ethan Baylis rushed nine times for 45 yards, Spencer Mason nine times for 45 and Brendan Marr 9 times for 78 yards. Furthermore,Β Clay Shreve had 50 yards and Eric Penney 53 yards in returns
As for the Cougars defense,Β Colin Hoorelbeck had 6 tackles a sack and a fumble recovery. Β Eric Penney had 8 tackles, Ricky O’Rourke added nine tackles, Quentin Forgie registered six tackles, Alex Formosa had seven tackles, Nolan Hakr added five tackles and Rush added four. Β Nicolas Melillo had a fumble recovery.
“We didn’t play very well in the first half, shooting ourselves in the foot numerous times,” said Cougars Head Coach Pugh after the loss. “The boys were challenged at half time to finish strong and they did exactly that, with no miscues or penalties.”
“Give Guelph credit, they are a very good football team and played a very clean and classy game. Β Eric Penney needs to be noted today, as his play has been amazing the last two weeks, his effort on the field is incredible.”
