The first round of the junior varsity playoffs are in the books for both the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and Ontario Football Conference (OFC).
Cumberland Panthers, Cambridge Lions, Oshawa Hawkeyes and Etobicoke Eagles all advanced to the next stage of the OVFL postseason after winning their contests this past weekend.
Meanwhile, Hamilton Hurricanes, Guelph Jr Gryphons, Peterborough Wolverines and North Halton Crimson Tide are moving on to the next round in the OFC.
Here are the results from junior varsity playoffs in both the OVFL and OFC:
ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):
CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 27, WEST DURHAM DOLPHINS 9:
On Saturday afternoon at Millenium Field, the Cumberland Panthers cruised to a 27-9 victory over West Durham Panthers.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 21, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 6:
At Jacob Hespeler Field on Saturday afternoon, Griffin Thomas scored two touchdowns and rushed for 96 yards on 24 carries as the Cambridge Lions advanced to the next round of the postseason with the 21-6 win over visiting Mississauga Warriors.
Tyler Malloch tallied a major and rushed for 51 yards on nine carries for the Lions.
On defence, Nick Stainsby caught two interceptions and registered three solo tackles. Avery O’Hare had an interception as well as an assisted and four solo tackles. Trenton DaCosta added an interception, two solo and three assisted tackles in the win.
As for the Warriors, Trey Brydon scored the lone touchdown on a punt return. Jonathan Keizer amassed 55 yards on three receptions while Aman Aujla racked up 53 yards on six receptions.
George-Anthony Kotselidis completed 14 passes in 32 attempts for 143 yards in the loss.
Samuel Cole-Ashbury registered six solo and four assisted tackles for the Warriors defence. Adam Caron added a solo tackle and four assisted tackles.
OSHAWA HAWKEYES 38, KINGSTON GRENADIERS 22:
On Saturday night at Oshawa Civic Stadium, David Maecker completed 19 passes in 33 attempts for 239 yards and two passing touchdowns as the hosts Hawkeyes eliminated visiting Kingston Grenadiers from the playoffs with a 38-22 victory.
Aaron Watkins scored a touchdown and rushed for 111 yards on 17 carries as well as 66 yards on four receptions. Additionally, Matt Hurley tallied a major and amassed 109 yards on six receptions. Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) participant Jelani Yorke added a score and had 66 yards on four receptions for the Hawkeyes.
Jacob Hill added a 16 yard field goal and added five PAT’s in the win. Dawson Theriault registered four solo tackles to lead the defence.
ETOBICOKE EAGLES 19, BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 9:
At Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School on Sunday afternoon, Marcel Grant scored a touchdown and racked up 111 yards on seven receptions as the Etobicoke Eagles got past the Brampton Bulldogs 19-9.
Horatio Martin also tallied a major and rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries for the Eagles.
Khalil Wilson completed nine passes in 16 attempts for 125 yards, rushed for 29 yards on two carries and added a rushing as well as a passing touchdown in the victory. On defence, Wilson led the way as he caught two interceptions, recorded a solo sack as well as five solo and four assisted tackles.
Ife Onyemenan caught an interception as well as five solo and seven assisted tackles. Moreover, Devonte Smikle recorded a solo sack as well as two solo and eleven assisted tackles. Finally, Christopher Haggart added a solo and seven assisted tackles for the Eagles defence.
Keegan Dicks added a PAT.

HAMILTON HURRICANES 41, BURLINGTON STAMPEDERS 24:

Like the Varsity game, a dominant tailback proved to be the difference for the victors. The defending Champion Hurricanes rode Michael Chris Ike’s 30 carries for 307 yards over the Stampeders in a 41-24 decision at Burlington. Chris Ike scored on runs of 7, 1 and 26 yards for Hamilton. Other Hamilton scores came from Savaughn Magnaye Jones on a 17 yard run, and Oneil Lynch on a 2 yard run. Jacob Patten added two field goals from 27 yards out and also was good on 3 converts. Anthony Abele ran in for a 2 point convert. Stamps pivot Kyle Rourke passed for 3 touchdowns. Noah Griffith caught two of them from 16 and 21 yards out while Michael Lehmann snared a pass from 14 yards away. Rourke finished the afternoon 23 for 37 for 279 yards and also was intercepted twice. James Condon hoofed a 26 yard field goal and was successful on his 3 convert tries. The Hurricanes move on to Guelph to take on the undefeated Jr. Gryphons on August 1st for the South Division title. The Hurricanes will be looking to turn the tables on the Gryphons as Guelph prevailed 31-24 during their regular season encounter.

n the nightcap, the Wolverines JV’s dominated the Titans from the opening kick off and lead 42-0 at the half. The Titans scored a late TD for the final 61-6 score. Scoring for the Wolverines were Ryan McNamara with 3 TD’s and Keegan Crough, Cameron Gilmore and Nick Clarkin had 2 TD’s each. Keegan Crough converted 7 PAT kicks. The Wolverines will now prepare for an exciting matchup with the Crimson Tide for the conference championship.
