OVFL & OFC RECAP (JV – Week 1): Maecker steers Hawkeyes, Brown powers Jr. Stangs & Magnaye Jones’ hurricane force

Week 1 is in the books for both the Ontario Football Varsity League (OVFL) and Ontario Football Conference (OFC) Junior Varsity Divisions.

In OVFL action, two teams earned shutout victories – Cambridge Lions and Oshawa Hawkeyes. Other winners include London Jr. Mustangs, Ottawa Myers Riders, Cumberland Panthers, Kingston Grenadiers, Hamilton Ironmen and Niagara Spears.

As for the OFC, the Burlington Stampeders were the only team to earn a shutout victory decisively this past weekend. Other Week 1 winners were Huronia Stallions, Toronto Jr Argos, North Halton Crimson Tide, Peterborough Wolverines, Twin Cities Predators and Hamilton Hurricanes.

ONTARIO VARSTIY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

Cole Burniston 1

NIAGARA SPEARS 37, ESSEX RAVENS 18:

At Kiwanis Field in St. Catharines under Friday Night Lights, Maksym Nazartchyk scored three touchdowns and rushed for 69 yards in Niagara Spears 37-18 win over Essex Ravens.

OPC participant Cole Burniston tallied a major and rushed for 99 yards on 12 carries for the Spears. Hayden Riley added five PAT’s.

Jake Porter led the Spears defence as he caught an interception as well as three solo and three assisted tackles.

As for the Ravens, Jacob Savoni scored two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving), amassed 123 rushing yards on 16 carries and 46 yards on two receptions in the loss. Zachary Papineau recorded a sack as well as four solo and six assisted tackles to steer the defence.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 12, WEST DURHAM DOLPHINS 6:

At Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute on Saturday, the hosts Kingston Grenadiers pulled out a 12-6 win over visiting West Durham Dolphins.

HAMILTON IRONMEN 29, SAULT (SSM) SABRECATS 6:

At McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium, Isaac McAlonan tallied a major and rushed for 76 yards on 13 carries as the Hamilton Ironmen cruised to the 29-6 victory over Sault Sabrecats.

Ethan Bastarache added two field goals (26 and 25 yard attempts) as well as three PAT’s.

Levar Anderson had 83 rushing yards on 13 carries while Jacob Patten had a 40 yard reception in the game.

On defence, Leonard Hernandez caught two interceptions as well as registered two solo and eight assisted tackles.

Greg Caruso led the Sabrecats with 112 yards on three receptions.  Joe Trudeau caught two interceptions as well as added an assisted and four solo tackles.

CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 63, HALTON COWBOYS 6:

At Millennium Field, Cumberland Panthers dismantled the Halton Cowboys 63-6 this past weekend.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 28, TORONTO THUNDER 21:

At Mary Ward Catholic School on Saturday, Liam Paquette registered four solo and five assisted tackles as the Ottawa Myers Riders got by the Toronto Thunder 28-21.

Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) pivot James Keenan completed four passes in five attempts and a passing touchdown.

OSHAWA HAWKEYES 51, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 0:

On Saturday at Oshawa Civic Stadium, David Maecker completed 14 passes in 19 attempts for 242 yards and four passing touchdowns as the host Hawkeyes delivered a 51-0 thumping to the Metro Toronto Wildcats.

Matt Hurley scored three touchdowns and racked up 93 yards on five receptions for the Hawkeyes.  Bobby Cadman also tallied a major and had 66 rushing yards. Austin Butler amassed 47 yards on two receptions while Alfred Olay had 41 yards on two receptions.

Garrett Wannack added an 18 yard field goal and was successful on six conversion attempts.

On defence, Brenden Point registered five solo and five assisted tackles.

London Jr Mustangs Week 9 OVFL

LONDON JR MUSTANGS 47, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 14:

At TD Waterhouse Stadium on Saturday, Chase Brown scored three touchdowns and amassed 246 rushing yards on 22 carries as host London Jr Mustangs coasted to a 47-14 victory over visiting Mississauga Warriors.

Tazie Vang Bell also tallied two majors and had 94 rushing yards on eight carries. Mitchell Deziel added five PAT’s in the win.

Tamurie Bringi recorded a solo sack as well as two solo and seven assisted tackles on the Jr Mustangs defence.  Daniel Valente chipped in with three solo and seven assisted tackles.

As for the Warriors, Josiah McKoy scored a touchdown and had 109 yards on eight receptions.  Jonathan Keizer tallied the other major and had 36 yards on three receptions.

Warriors pivot George-Anthony Kotselidis completed 13 passes in 31 attempts for 164 yards and two passing touchdowns.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 30, BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 0:

On Saturday night at Jacob Hespeler Field, David Aiken tallied a major and rushed for 79 yards on 13 carries as host Cambridge Lions earned a 30-0 shutout victory over Brampton Bulldogs.

Elvis Sanchez amassed 84 yards on 20 carries while Jacob Bradley had 35 yards on two receptions in the win.

Kosi Oneyka led the Bulldogs defence with nine solo and seven assisted tackles.  Additionally, Kadeem McFarlane chipped in with seven solo and five assisted tackles.  Phonarien Burrell recorded two solo sacks as well as two solo and three assisted tackles in the loss.

Huronia Stallions

HURONIA STALLIONS 27, SUDBURY GLADIATORS 16:

On Saturday in Barrie, the hosts Huronia Stallions held off the Sudbury Gladiators for a 27-16 win.

Carter Struk and Ryan Kat each scored touchdowns for the Gladiators.  Isaac Walt amassed over 100 yards on six receptions in the loss.  On defence, Andrew North led the way as he caught an interception and recovered a fumble.

PETERBOROUGH WOLVERINES 45, OAKVILLE TITANS 28:

On Saturday at TASS Field, Keegan Crough tallied two majors, added a field goal and five PAT’s as the Peterborough Wolverines defeated Oakville Titans 45-28.

Ryan McNamara also scored two touchdowns.  Moreover, Chase Batley and OPC participant Cameron Gilmore each added a major.

HAMILTON HURRICANES 36, FOREST CITY THUNDERBIRDS 26:

Savaughn Magnaye Jones caught touchdown strikes of 28 and 32 yards from OPC pivot Zack Beno to lead the way for Hamilton.  Olivier Muembi crossed the goal line from 8 yards and 2 yards and Xavier Masotti hooked up with Beno from 33 yards for a major.  Brent Hall converted for four converts and the defence forced a safety touch to be conceded.  Tom Cummings ran and caught for majors as well as running for a 2 point convert for Forest City while Tiger Poirier had an 89 yard kickoff return and Noah Johns latched on to a Drew Foster pass from 72 yards.

Muebmi led the Canes ground attack with 147 yards on 22 carries.  Magnaye Jones was the leading receiving for Hamilton with 6 pass catches for 137 yards.  Pivot Zack Beno was 13 for 23 and 276 yards with 3 touchdown passes and was intercepted one time.
