OVFL & OFC RECAP (VARSITY – 7): Dramatic finishes in Pickering & Hamilton, Robinson unstoppable, Lavric, Wray & Larsen silver linings in losses

With only a couple of weeks left in both the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and the Ontario Football Conference (OFC), teams are jockeying for playoff positions.

In the OVFL, Week 7 winners include York Simcoe Bucs, West Durham Dolphins, Kingston Grenadiers, Ottawa Myers Riders, Cambridge Lions, Oshawa Hawkeyes, Essex Ravens, London Jr Mustangs and Niagara Spears.

Meanwhile, Hamilton Hurricanes, Huronia Stallions and North Halton Crimson Tide won their contests.

Here are the results from Week 7 action in both the OVFL and OFC:

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE (OVFL):

YORK SIMCOE BUCS 39, MARKHAM RAIDERS 35:

On Saturday afternoon at St. Maximillian Kolbe CHS, Tristan Kuchar scored two touchdowns and rushed for 160 yards on 25 carries as the York Simcoe Bucs defeated Markham Raiders 39-35.

Michael Bazzo completed 12 passes in 24 attempts for 215 yards and two passing touchdowns in the win.  Josh Menna added a 21 yard field goal, a PAT and a rouge.

As for the Raiders, Mason Posival tallied a major and amassed 132 yards on six receptions.  Tyler Munro scored a touchdown and rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries in the loss.

Matt Prucha completed 15 passes in 38 attempts for 228 yards and four passing touchdowns.  Majeed Sabsonre was successful on five conversion attempts for the Raiders.

On defence, Tobi Solebo recorded a solo sack as well as four solo and nine assisted tackles.  Zeandre Regis added a solo sack, three solo and nine assisted tackles.

WEST DURHAM DOLPHINS 14, TORONTO THUNDER 13:

At Pine Ridge High School on Saturday afternoon, the West Durham Dolphins edged the Toronto Thunder 14-13.

Darnel Jarrett rushed for 62 yards on 12 carries in the win.  Robert Carmichael added two PAT’s.

Alfred Green led the Dolphins defence with six solo and four assisted tackles.

Justice Johnson tallied a major on a 122 yard kickoff return for the Thunder.  Daynar Facey rushed for 77 yards on five carries in the loss. Chris Larsen forced two fumbles, recorded a solo sack as well as seven solo and five assisted tackles.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 51, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 27:

On Saturday afternoon at Loyalist Collegiate, Harry Robinson scored two touchdowns and rushed for 238 yards on 21 carries as the Kingston Grenadiers cruised to a 51-27 victory over Metro Toronto Wildcats.

Dylan Fisher completed 13 passes in 19 attempts for 174 yards and a passing touchdown for the Grenadiers.  Carter Matheson racked up 92 yards on four receptions in the win. Mike Bashall added 18 yard field goal and six PAT’s.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 27, CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 7:

At Millenium Park on Saturday evening, the Ottawa Myers Riders coasted to a 27-7 win over Cumberland Panthers.

Jalla Lansanah rushed for 87 yards on seven carries in the win.  #CFCOPC participant Jacob Spinella completed 10 passes in 25 attempts for 171 passing yards.

As for the Panthers, #CFC100 Kurleigh Gittens Jr amassed 114 yards on seven receptions and was successful on a conversion attempt.  Quintin Gregory rushed for 55 yards on 12 carries in the loss.

Drew Garby completed 16 passes in 36 attempts for 182 yards and a passing touchdown.

 

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 28, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 19:

On Loyola Catholic Secondary School on Saturday evening, Gordon Lam tallied two majors and had 81 yards on five receptions as the Cambridge Lions got by the Mississauga Warriors 28-19.

Brad Vince amassed 115 yards on 11 receptions in the win.

Pivot Mark Christopher completed 12 passes in 16 attempts for 159 yards and two passing touchdowns for the Lions. David Chacon was successful on four conversion attempts.

On defence, Devin Keeling led the way with six solo and two assisted tackles.

Shakur Wray scored a touchdown and racked up 176 yards on nine receptions for the Warriors.  Kian Schaffer-Baker also had a score and had 94 yards on six receptions.

Alex Lavric completed completed 18 passes in 34 attempts for 343 yards and two passing touchdowns in the loss.  Merrick Sproule added a 24 yard field goal and two PAT’s.

#CFC100 Jack Cassar guided the Warriors defence as he caught an interception, recorded a solo sack as well as four solo and five assisted tackles.  Sean Cotter chipped in with eight solo and four assisted tackles in the loss.

OSHAWA HAWKEYES 41, CORNWALL WILDCATS 15:

On Saturday night at Oshawa Civic Stadium, Dawson Odei tallied a major and rushed for 118 yards on 11 carries as the hosts Hawkeyes downed the visiting Cornwall Wildcats 41-15.

Kahma Massinga rushed for 60 yards on seven carries in the win.  Brendan Whitney added four PAT’s.

Davis Gadjovich recorded a solo and two assisted sacks to lead the defence.  Additionally, he registered five solo and five assisted tackles for the Hawkeyes.

As for the Wildcats, Reeve Nicholson registered six solo and three assisted tackles.  Christopher Millward added a PAT.  Jakob Loucks completed eight passes in 16 attempts for 138 yards and a passing touchdown in the loss.

ESSEX RAVENS 44, BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 8:

At University of Windsor Alumni Stadium on Saturday night, Alex Bornais scored two touchdowns and racked up 103 yards on six receptions as the Essex Ravens dismantled the Brampton Bulldogs 44-8.

Braeden Braccio rushed for 121 yards on 19 carries while Daniel Metcalfe tallied a major and rushed for 55 yards on seven carries for the Ravens.

Pivot Anthony Bontorin completed nine passes in 14 attempts for 144 yards and three passing touchdowns in the win.  Dante Brown added five PAT’s and two rouges.

LONDON JR MUSTANGS 56, ETOBICOKE EAGLES 0:

On Sunday afternoon at Father Henry Carr Secondary School, Cole Kussmann tallied two majors and rushed for 177 yards on 17 carries as the London Jr Mustangs earned a 56-0 shutout victory over hosts Etobicoke Eagles.

Brentyne AndersonBrown also scored a touchdown and rushed for 169 yards on nine carries.  Neil Garrity added two field goals (24 yards, 19 yards), 6 PAT’s and a rouge.

NIGARA SPEARS 34, HAMILTON IRONMEN 9:

RECAP AND GAME SUMMARY BY JOHN METCALFE

A tale of two games within a game as the Ironmen led 9-3 at the half.  Angelo Delsordo and Alex Brophy hooked up for a 56 yard scoring strike with David Benedetti adding the point after and the defence tackled the Spear’s ball carrier in the end zone while Owen Charnock booted a 30 yard field goal for the Spears score.  The second half was all Niagara.  Charnock started things off with a 27 yard field goal, followed by Jordan Terrio running in from 3 yards away.  Zyer Harris then returned an interception 30 yards to the end zone then Jack Gelbart and Blair Robertson combined for a 69 yard pass and run score.  Cameron MacDonald ran in from 3 yards out and Charnock converted all four second half majors to keep the Spears undefeated at 6-0 on the season.

In the Sr. Varsity game the Wolverines faced a determined and physical Gladiators team. The Wolverines defense came up with a strong effort and stopped the Gladiators offense especially in the second half. The Wolverines scored first and the Gladiators responded early in the second quarter to tie the game at 7. The Wolverines scored late in the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead at the half and never looked back as they recorded their 26-7 victory and increased their record to 5-1. Scoring for the Wolverines with single TD’s were Dylan Astrom, Nathan O’Keefe and Devon MacCallum. Devin Claypole converted 3 PAT Kicks and kicked a 28 yd. Field goal. The defense recorded a team safety. The Sr. Squad will also travel to Toronto on Sunday to face the Jr. Argos in a crucial 5 pm game at the St. Michael’s College. The Jr. Argos are undefeated and this will be a battle for first place in the Ramsay Conference. Both teams will have one game remaining on their schedules next week and the outcome of those games will finalize the top 4 playoff seeds for the playoff positions. The final regular season game for the Wolverines will be on Saturday July 18th when they host the North Halton Crimson Tide in a 7pm game at the TASS Field.

HAMILTON HURRICANES 20, BURLINGTON STAMPEDERS 18:

Anyone who came to watch the Varsity Hamilton Hurricanes and Burlington Stampeders game on Saturday night got their money’s worth for the price of admission. The slug fest began with a punt return miscue by the Hurricanes resulting in the Stamps first score of the game. The Hurricane offense wasn’t quite firing in the first quarter either and after a 60 yard Jordan Lyons touchdown run followed by yet another punt return miscue, the Stamps appeared to have the game in hand early with a 15-0 lead by the mid 2nd quarter. The Hurricanes finally started rolling, pounding the ball and with some deep grabs by their receiving corps, and ended a solid mid-2nd quarter drive with Liam Putt firing a 12 yard touchdown pass to Angus Button to get the Canes on the board. The first half ended with yet another Hurricane drive resulting in a field goal and the Stamps leading 15-10 at the break. The second half proved to be just as back-and-forth and exciting, and the Canes took a late 3rd quarter lead with a 10 yard strike from Putt to Tyson Middlemost giving the Canes their first lead of the game. With the score 17-15, the Hurricane defense led by Mitch Garland and Eric Gaudet were in shutdown mode. Andrew Pacheco and Mitch Theile were a force in the trenches but the Stamps still had some fire in them and marched to the Canes 25 yard line and took an 18-17 lead into the dying minutes of the 4th quarter. Liam Putt wasn’t done his passing display as the Canes marched down to the field from their 35 to deep in Stampeder territory, sealing the game with a 30 yard field goal and a 20-18 final. The Stamps fall to 5-1, as the Hurricanes improve to 5-1, setting up a 3 way tie for first between the Hurricanes, Stamps and Gryphons heading into the last week of the south division season. The Hurricanes will meet Twin Cities next week as the Stamps and Gryphons will battle for who will end 6-1 or 5-2.
