OVFL & OFC VARSITY RECAP (3): Spears stun Ravens; Myers Riders, Lions & Grenadiers remain perfect; Crimson Tide edge Jr. Argos

The Niagara Spears made a statement this past weekend in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).

In Week 3 action, the Spears shocked the defending league champions Essex Ravens 25-23.

While there were no shutouts, there were a lot of close games in the OVFL.  Among the winners included Toronto Thunder, SSM Sabrecats, York Region Lions, Mississauga Warriors, Ottawa Myers Riders, Kingston Grenadiers and London Jr. Mustangs.

As for the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), the defending league champions Burlington Stampeders opened their 2016 campaign, picking up from where they left off last season.  The Stampeders earned the only shutout of Week 2 with a 48-0 win over Chatham-Kent Cougars.

Hamilton Varsity Tiger Cats, Oakville Titans, Guelph Jr Gryphons, Sudbury Gladiators, North Halton Crimson Tide and Peterborough Wolverines were victorious this past weekend.

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

TORONTO THUNDER 12, WEST DURHAM DOLPHINS 8:

On Saturday afternoon at Birchmount Stadium, the Toronto Thunder got past the West Durham Dolphins 12-8.

The Thunder move to 2-1 on the season while the Dolphins are still winless this season (0-2).

For the Dolphins, Mitchell Van Pelt conpleted 10 passes in 16 attempts for 182 yards.  Additionally, Andre Goulborne rushed for 77 passes on 14 carries while #CFC100 CLASS 2016 Trey Humes had 45 yards on six carries.

Bailey Grimes racked up 79 yards on two receptions in the loss. Austin Brown added a PAT.

SSM SABRECATS 15, HAMILTON IRONMEN 10:

At Superior Heights Collegiate on Saturday evening, Jared Strachan recorded two solo and two assisted sacks as well as five solo and four assisted tackles as the hosts SSM Sabrecats defeated visiting Hamilton Ironmen 15-10.

The Sabrecats are now 2-1 while the Ironmen slide to 1-2 on the season.

Pivot Michael Byron completed 19 passes in 27 attempts for 195 yards and a touchdown. Isaac Belsito tallied a major and had 64 yards on six receptions in the win.  Dalton Toppan racked up 55 yards on eight receptions while Tristian Marshall rushed for 62 yards on 16 carries. Tyler Bickell was successful on two conversion attempts for the Sabrecats.

YORK REGION LIONS 14, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 7:

On Saturday evening at St. Maximillian Kolbe High School, Vincent Reale scored a touchdown and amassed 115 yards on five receptions as the York Region Lions escaped with a 14-7 victory over Metro Toronto Wildcats.

The Lions remain perfect with a 3-0 record while the Wildcats are still in search of their first win as they are 0-3 so far this year.

#CFCOPC pivot Noah Craney completed completed 12 passes in 20 attempts for 154 yards and two touchdowns in the win.  Nolan Maggiacomo rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries,  Marc Liegghio added two PAT’s in the game.

On defence, Tucker Rozeboom recorded a solo sack as well as three solo and 11 assisted tackles for the Lions. Alex Jafs registered two solo and nine assisted tackles.

Fernando Fuller tallied the lone major for the Wildcats and rushed for 95 yards on 14 carries.  Joshua Knight was successful on the point after attempt.

Moreover, Joshua Musembwa rushed for 41 yards on 12 carries and had 50 yards on four receptions in the loss.

MISSSISSAUGA WARRIORS 45, ETOBICOKE EAGLES 6:

At Loyola Catholic Secondary School on Saturday evening, the Mississauga Warriors dismantled the Etobicoke Eagles 45-6.

The Warriors are 2-1  while the Eagles are winless this season with a 0-3 record.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 52, CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 10:

On Saturday evening at Beckwith Sports Park, the Ottawa Myers Riders remain perfect after crushing the Cumberland Panthers 52-10.

The Myers Riders are now 3-0 while the Panthers are 0-2.

For the Panthers, Quinton Gregory tallied the lone major for the Panthers and racked up 83 yards on eight receptions. Zachary Batal added a 12 yard field goal and a PAT.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 13, OSHAWA HAWKEYES 3:

At Oshawa Civic Stadium Field #1 on Saturday night, Harry Robinson scored a touchdown and rushed for 116 yards on 24 carries as the visiting Kingston Grenadiers won 13-3 over Oshawa Hawkeyes.

The Grenadiers remain perfect with a 3-0 record while the Hawkeyes fall to 1-2 on the season.

Shawn Miller was successful on the conversion attempt for the Grenadiers.

Tristan Bell led the Grenadiers defence with a batted ball, five solo and seven assisted tackles.  Furthermore, Taylor Stalkie had a batted ball, recorded an assisted sack as well as five solo and six assisted tackles.  Chad Stymest recorded two solo sacks, four solo and two assisted tackles.  Devon Parris caught an interception as well as two solo and eight assisted tackles in the win.

David Maecker completed 17 passes in 24 attempts for 257 yards for the Hawkeyes.  Additionally, Matt Hurley amassed 121 yards on four receptions while Jelani Yorke had 67 yards on seven receptions in the loss.  Liam Meyer racked up 50 yards on four receptions.

LONDON JR. MUSTANGS 35, BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 6:

On Saturday night at Chinguacousy Park, Brentyne AndersonBrown tallied two majors and rushed for 146 yards on 15 carries as the London Jr. Mustangs won on the road, thumping Brampton Bulldogs 35-6.

The Jr. Mustangs move to 201 on the season while the Bulldogs slide to 0-2.

Tazie Vang Bell also scored for the Jr. Mustangs and rushed for 66 yards on 13 carries in the win.  Tyler Cejvan added five PAT’s.

For the Bulldogs, Benjamin Arhen amassed 151 yards on three receptions.  Pivot Chris Spencer completed nine passes in 29 attempts for 199 yards.

On defence, Temi Owoaje recorded two solo sacks, five solo and three assisted tackles in the loss.

NIAGARA SPEARS 25, ESSEX RAVENS 23:

At University of Windsor Stadium on Sunday night, the visiting Niagara Spears edged the Essex Ravens 25-23.

The Spears are a perfect 3-0 while the Ravens are 2-1.

HAMILTON VARSITY TIGER-CATS 44, TWIN-CITIES PREDATORS 10:

The Varsity unit improved to 2-0 with their second straight win with a 44-10 decision over the Twin Cities Predators (1-1).

Nicolas Petermann led the Cats with two scores while Damian Tesoro, Tyson Middlemost and Sammy Restivo crossed the goal line for Hamilton.

Jordan Patten Botelho was 4 of 5 on converts and booted field goals of 43, 45 and 56 yards.

The defence also scored a safety touch with a tackle in the end zone.  Zaneen Saed scored the lone touchdown for Tri Cities with Robel Berhane adding the convert and a 33 yard field goal.

 

Oakville Titans

OAKVILLE TITANS 23, NIPISSING WILD 22:

On Saturday, the Nipissing WIld enjoyed a 21-9 lead, only to see it evaporate by the end of their game against the Oakville Titans. The Titans prevailed with a 23-22 victory.

Adam Asselin and Kyle Regimbald scored touchdowns for the Wild.  Moreover, Riley Gravelle added three PAT’s in the loss.

GUELPH JR GRYPHONS 30, BRANTFORD BISONS 8:

On Saturdayy, the Guelph Jr. Gryphons began their 2016 campaign with a 30-8 win over Brantford Bisons.

SUDBURY GLADIATORS 30, HURONIA STALLIONS 9:

On Saturday,  Chris Moutsatsos connected with both Darcy Labelle and Graeme Stevens for touchdown scores as the Sudbury Gladiators cruised to a 30-9 win over Huronia Stallions.

At halftime, the Gladiators enjoyed an 11-2 lead over the Stallions and never looked back.

Additonally, Josh Giromaletto stripped the ball from the Slallons and ran down field to score a 30 yard major for the Gladiators.

NORTH HALTON CRIMSON TIDE 17, TORONTO JR. ARGOS 14:

On Saturday, it wasn’t pretty but the North Halton Crimson Tide got their first win of the season, narrowly getting by the Toronto Jr. Argos 17-14.

BURLINGTON STAMPEDERS 48, CHATHAM-KENT COUGARS 0:

The defending champions got their title defence off to a good start with a 48-0 shutout over the Chatham Kent Cougars in Chatham.

#CFC100 CLASS 2016 Dominic Mandalfino led the charge with 3 rushing touchdowns plus amassing 137 yards on 13 rushes.

Single majors were recorded by Raymar Lloyd, Ayden Amestoy, J.D. Foxcroft and Mathew Orr.  Jared Fernandez Brown was good on 5 of 7 converts and also had a rouge on a kickoff.

PETERBOROUGH WOLVERINES 32, VAUGHAN REBELS 8:

In the final game on Sunday, the Sr. Wolverines displayed great defense in dominating the Rebels 32-8.

The Wolverines used a balanced offensive attack and a strong defense to easily defeat the Rebels 32-8. Scoring for the Wolverines were Nick Clarkin with two touchdowns scored on passes from quarterback Ryan Astrom and Nick converted on all four convert kicks.

Alex Lew also scored two touchdowns on runs and the Defense scored two team safeties. Ryan McNamara had a good rushing game as well.

The Wolverines remain 2-0 and will now host the Sudbury Gladiators who are also 2-0 at TAS this Saturday with a 5 pm contest. This game will be a battle for first place in the Ramsay Conference between two good , strong football teams. This Saturday should be an exciting day for OFC football at TAS.
