OVFL & OFC Week 1 (JV) recap: Tight games, shutouts & lopsided victories

Week 1 is in the books for both the Ontario Football Varsity League (OVFL) and Ontario Football Conference (OFC) Ā Junior Varsity Divisions.

In OVFL action, two teams earned shutout victories ā€“ Hamilton Ironmen and Cumberland Panthers. Other winners include Niagara Spears, Ottawa Myers Riders, Scarborough Thunder, Brampton Bulldogs, Ajax-Pickering Dolphins, Mississauga Warriors and Cambridge Lions.

As for the OFC, there were blowouts, lopsided victories and tight games. Week 1 winners were North Halton Crimson Tide, Huronia Stallions, Clarington Knights, Hamilton Hurricanes, Peterborough Wolverines, Guelph Bears, Burlington Stampeders and Brantford Bisons.

NIAGARA SPEARS 21, ESSEX RAVENS 14:

At Kiwanis Field, the Niagara Spears opened their 2014 campaign with a 21-14 win over the Essex Ravens.

Jack Andrews registered six solo and five assisted tackles.Ā  Jake Porter had two solo and two assisted tackles in the victory. Hayden Riley was successful on three conversion attempts.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 38, KINGSTON GRENADIERS 15:

The Ottawa Myers Riders scored their first win of the season, 38-15 over the Kingston Grenadiers.

Brian Franklin scored a major and had 66 yards on three receptions.Ā  Additionally, he rushed for 62 yards on nine carries. Owen Clement was successful on five conversion attempts and added an 18 yard field goal.

As for the Grenadiers, Damon Fair led the defense with seven solo and five assisted tackles.Ā  Nicolas added two PATā€™s in the loss.

JV Toronto Thunder

SCARBOROUGH THUNDERĀ  20, YORK SIMCOE BUCS 8:

Connor Smith completed 11 passes in 16 attempts for 188 passing yards and two passing touchdowns to lead the Scarborough Thunder to a 20-8 victory over York Simcoe Bucs.

Marcus Carr tallied a major while racking up 79 yards on three receptions (average of 26.3 yards per reception).

On defense, Jeremiah Marriott registered five solo and four assisted tackles. He also recorded a solo and an assisted sack for the Thunder.

Cumberland Panthers

CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 40, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 0:

The Cumberland Panthers got their first win of the season as they shutout the Metro Toronto Wildcats 48-0.

Pascal Roy Lapensee had eight completions in 16 attempts for 193 passing yards and two passing touchdowns to lead the way for the Panthers.Ā  Baxter Balthazar (117 rushing yards on seven carries) and Dylan St. Pierre (117 receiving yards on three receptions) and Nick Renaud (117 receiving yards on five receptions) each scored two touchdowns.

BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 36, LONDON JR MUSTANGS 8:

Jevante Stanley rushed for 196 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Brampton Bulldogs to a 36-8 win over the London Jr. Mustangs.

Malcolm Miller rushed for 111 yards on six carries (average of 18.5 yards per carry) and scored a touchdown.Ā  Juwan Jesquith added a 90 yard touchdown reception and added four PATā€™s.

Brandon Almeida registered four solo and two assisted tackles to lead the Bulldogsā€™ defense.

As for the Mustangs, pivot Ben Schmidt completed 15 passes in 33 attempts for 293 passing yards and a passing touchdown.Ā  Thomas Hawkins amassed 171 yards on six receptions (average of 28.5 yards per reception) while Brentyne Anderson Brown rushed for 123 yards on 21 carries. William Upfold was successful on a conversion attempt.

AJAX-PICKERING DOLPHINS 36, OSHAWA HAWKEYES 6:

Justin Aliberti had 11 completions in 15 attempts for 280 passing yards and three passing touchdowns as the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins coasted to a 36-8 win over the Oshawa Hawkeyes.

Kenan Clarke had 115 yards on four receptions and tallied a major.Ā  Bailey Grimes had a 73 yard touchdown reception.

MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 47, HALTON COWBOYS 8:

Brandon Metz scored three touchdowns and rushed for 89 yards on seven carries as the Mississauga Warriors cruised to a 47-8 victory over the Halton Cowboys.

Kristopher Stephens returned the ball back into the end zone for an 80 yard touchdown score.

Alexander Lavric completed 16 passes on 21 attempts for 197 passing yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Justinkyle Jodhan registered five solo and an assisted tackle.Ā  Additionally, Jodhan recorded two solos and a forced fumble.

As for the Cowboys, Marcus Colangelo registered seven solo three assisted tackles in the loss.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 57, ETOBICOKE EAGLES 7:

The Cambridge Lions gave something for the home crowd to cheer about as the team defeated the visiting Etobicoke Eagles 57-7 at Jacob Hespeler Field.

Jackson White led the Lions offense with eight completions on 15 attempts for 193 passing yards and two touchdowns.Ā  Griffin Monaghan (101 yards on three receptions) and Mario Alyas (73 yards on seven carries) each tallied a major in the victory.

Nathan MacLean was successful on seven conversion attempts for the Lions.

Ben Drummond led the Lions defense with six solo and three assisted tackles as well as a forced fumble.

As for the Eagles, Justice Allin rushed for 126 yards on 13 carries and scored touchdowns on a kickoff return. Liam Murphy was successful on the conversion attempt.Ā  Defensively, Andrew MacLean registered four solo and five assisted tackles in the loss.

HAMILTON IRONMEN 43, SSM SABRECATS 0:

At McMasterā€™s Ron Joyce Stadium, the Hamilton Ironmen won their opening game of the OVFL Junior Varsity Season ā€“ a 43-0 shutout victory over the visiting SSM Sabrecats.

Isaiah Joseph rushed for 158 yards on 11 carries and tallied two majors in the win.Ā  Pivot Alexander Di Pietro had 17 completions in 28 attempts for 137 passing yards and two touchdowns.

David Benedetti added six PATā€™s in the Ironmenā€™s win.

CLARINGTON KNIGHTS 37, SUDBURY GLADIATORS 6:

At James Jerome Sports Complex, the Clarington Knights coasted to a 37-6 victory over the Sudbury Gladiators.

Cole Way tallied the lone major for the Gladiators in the loss. As for the Gladiators defense, Brody Laberge and Simon Cope each caught interceptions.
