OVFL & OFC Week 3 (Varsity) Recap: Niagara nailbiter, Fera’s magic & Wildcats claim Battle of Toronto

Week 3 provided some epic moments on the field in Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and Ontario Football Conference (OFC).

Elijah Fera set an OVFL record this past weekend.Β  The Essex Ravens running back scored seven touchdowns in the team’s 54-28 win over the Mississauga Warriors.

The Niagara Spears were successful on a last play field goal attempt to edge the visiting London Jr Mustangs 31-28. In another thriller, the Metro Toronto Wildcats won the Battle of Toronto as the team squeezed by the Scarborough Thunder 10-7.

Two teams earned shutout victories this past week – Cumberland Panthers and Sault Ste Marie Sabrecats.

Other OVFL winners include Kingston Grenadiers, Ottawa Myers Riders, Oshawa Hawkeyes, Cambridge Lions and Brampton Bulldogs.

In OFC, the Hamilton Hurricanes and Guelph Gryphons remain the only undefeated teams with 3-0 records after convincing victories this past weekend. Β Other Week 3 winners include Brantford Bisons, Huronia Stallions, Toronto Jr. Argonauts, Peterborough Wolverines and North Halton Crimson Tide.

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 37, AJAX-PICKERING DOLPHINS 1:

At Kinsmen Park, the Kingston Grenadiers coasted to the 37-1 victory over the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins.

For the Dolphins, Alonzo Addae had 52 yards on two receptions (average of 26 yards per reception) while Tevin Lawrence racked up 49 yards on four receptions.

METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 10, SCARBOROUGH THUNDER 7:

At Mary Ward, the Battle of Toronto was a tight one but the Metro Toronto Wildcats prevailed with a 10-7 win over the Scarborough Thunder.

Rakeem Simms tallied the lone major for the Thunder and amassed 126 rushing yards on 18 carries. Daynar Facey added a PAT while Shomari Murdock-Reid had 50 yards on five receptions in the loss.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 44, CORNWALL WILDCATS 4:

At Joe St. Denis Field, Jahdel Ferron scored four touchdowns and rushed for 181 yards on 15 carries (average of 12.1 yards per carry) as the Ottawa Myers Riders cruised to a 44-4 victory over the Cornwall Wildcats.

Phil Iloki also tallied a major and racked up 109 yards on four receptions for the victors.Β  Connor Ayre added six PAT’s while pivot Matthew Duffy completed 15 passes in 29 attempts for 229 passing yards and a passing touchdown.

On defense, Brad Herbst led the way for the Myers Riders as he registered three solo and nine assisted tackles.

Oshawa Hawkeyes

OSHAWA HAWKEYES 10, YORK SIMCOE BUCS 3:

At St. Maximillian Kolbe High School, Dawson Odei tallied a major and had 59 rushing yards as the Oshawa Hawkeyes edged the York Simcoe Bucs 10-3.

Jordan Baronet successfully attempted a 26 yard field goal and added a PAT in the victory.Β  Idahosa Yorke had 85 yards on five receptions (average of 17 yards per reception) while Braeden Vavassori had 53 yards on two receptions (average of 26.5 yards per reception).

On defense, Davian Reid-Lynch registered five solo and an assisted sack.Β  Niko Isovski caught an interception as well as racking up six solo and three assisted tackles for the Hawkeyes.

As for the Bucs, Marc Liegghio booted a 22 yard field goal.Β  Additionally, pivot Andrew Sarnese completed 19 passes in 42 attempts for 229 passing yards and a passing touchdown.Β  Eric Devries had 76 yards on four receptions (average of 19 yards per reception) while Luca Celebre had 79 yards on seven receptions (average of 11.3 yards per reception).

Mitchell LaMantia led the Bucs defense with four solo and five assisted tackles as well a recording three solo sacks.

Cumberland Panthers

CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 49, MARKHAM RAIDERS 0:

At Millennium Field, the Cumberland Panthers earned a 49-0 shutout win over the Markham Raiders.

Cedric Ky tallied two majors and rushed for 86 yards on seven carries for the Panthers. Β Jonathan Meyer added seven PAT’s in the victory.

Khadeem Pierre led the Panthers defense with three interceptions – including one that he returned for a touchdown score and three solo tackles.

 

Eli Fera record setting week 3 OVFL

 

ESSEX RAVENS 54, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 28:

It was a record breaking night at the University of Windsor.Β  Elijah Fera scored seven touchdowns to set a league record as the Essex Ravens coasted to a 54-28 win over the visiting Mississauga Warriors.

Fera also rushed for 217 yards on 33 carries for the Ravens.

Anthony Bontorin completed 11 passes in 17 attempts for 278 passing yards and a passing touchdown in the win.

For the Warriors, Trey Ivey scored three touchdowns and amassed 162 yards on five receptions (average of 32.4 yards per reception). Dante Brown was successful on four conversion attempts.

Nate Hobbs completed 13 passes in 28 attempts for 323 passing yards and four touchdowns in the loss.

On defense, Malcolm Campbell led the Warriors with seven solo and five assisted tackles.

SSM Sabrecats

SSM SABRECATS 42, ETOBICOKE EAGLES 0:

At Rocky DiPietro Field, the Sault Ste Marie Sabrecats earned a 42-0 shutout victory over the Etobicoke Eagles.

David Toppan scored two touchdowns and racked up 104 yards on eight receptions while Jason Thibodeau also tallied two majors and rushed for 66 yards on 11 carries to lead the Sabrecats. Β Brandon Vernelli added four PAT’s.

Nathan Elgie completed 24 passes in 36 attempts for 389 passing yards and four passing touchdowns.

Justin Senechal rushed for 138 yards on 17 carries while Mitchell Mazzuca had 111 yards on four receptions (average of 27.8 yards per reception).

On defense, Mitchell Stadnyk caught an interception as well as registered five solo and an assisted tackle. Β Additionally, he recorded a sack for the Sabrecats.

For the Eagles, Β Gage Leaver led the defensive with 10 solo and three assisted sacks.Β  Thomas Koos added four solo and three assisted sacks in the loss.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 49, HALTON COWBOYS 7:

At Jacob Hespeler Field, the Cambridge Lions crushed the visiting Halton Cowboys 49-7.

Tevon Brown scored the lone major for the Cowboys and rushed for 89 yards on two carries (average of 44.5 yards per carry). Β Merrick Sproule was successful on the conversion attempt. Β On defense, Phillip Wells was a beast as he registered 11 solo and an assisted tackle in the loss.

NIAGARA SPEARS 31, LONDON JR MUSTANGS 28:

At Kiwanis Field, the Niagara Spears were successful on a field goal attempt on the last play of the game to edge the London Jr. Mustangs 31-28.

For the Mustangs, Daishane Johnson tallied a major and had 87 yards on three receptions (average of 29 yards per reception) while Ben Kelly added four PAT’s.Β  Hunter Tilden racked up 109 yards on four receptions (average of 27.2 yards per reception).

James Parrot caught an interception and ran it into the end zone for a 32 yard touchdown score.Β  He also registered two solo and six assisted tackles.Β  Somebi Uzoegwu added four solo and 12 assisted tackles in the loss.

BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 31, HAMILTON IRONMEN 17:

At Ron Joyce Stadium, the Brampton Bulldogs stole a victory from the home team as they defeated the Hamilton Ironmen 31-17.

Toronto Jr Argos season preview

TORONTO JR. ARGONAUTS 48, NIPISSING WILD 36:

The Nipissing Wild enjoyed a 27-0 lead at halftime.Β  However, the Toronto Jr Argonauts came roaring back in the second half to secure a 48-36 victory over the Wild.

Nirvair Atuahene tallied three majors for the Argonauts, including a 24 yard touchdown pass from pivot Calvin Vaughan. Treyion Charles added a touchdown while Anthony Iafrate added two field goals for the victors.

Nick Weiszhaar scored two touchdowns (55 yards, 25 yard) for the Wild.Β  Additionally, Mitchell Loxton caught an interception and returned it into the end zone for a touchdown while Zach Delorme added a rushing major. Lex Brazeau caught an interception and ran it into the end zone in the loss.

Riley Gravelle added a field goal for the Wild.

GUELPH GRYPHONS 39, CHATHAM-KENT COUGARS 13:

The Guelph Gryphons cruised to a 39-13 win over the Chatham-Kent Cougars.

For the Cougars, Nate MacIntyre returned the ball for a 90 touchdown.Β  Pivot Jalen Butcher connected with Markus Shadd for a 73 yard touchdown reception. Β Trevor Niven added a PAT in the loss.
