OVFL: Oshawa Hawkeyes split games on a short week

The Hawkeyes regular scheduled game against the Markham Raiders was suppose to take place during week two of the season. However due to weather conditions the game was postponed to a later date forcing the Hawkeyes to play two games within four days.

In their matchup against the Raiders, the Hawks fell short once again losing 31-14 on a strange Tuesday night. Head Coach, Coach T put the outcome of the game into a short but sweet statement “we got taken to the wood-shed” he said. The Raiders started the game on offence in their no huddle package, which prevented the Hawkeyes from rotating players in and out. Coach T said, “they scored on their opening drive and never looked back”. Between their loss to Cumberland on the Saturday and their game Tuesday the Hawkeyes didn’t have a chance to practice or install any type of game plan. Jordan Duncan was able to score a major on a 93-yard punt return late in the game. The end result put the Hawkeyes to a record of 1-3 with no time to sulk or point fingers as they had to face Newmarket that following Saturday.

After actually having time to prepare and practice the Hawkeyes came out firing on all cylinders as they got their second win of the season over the Newmarket Bucs 35-9 improving to 2-3. The focus of that game was to move the ball through the air, which they did at ease. Hawks QB Quinlan Harrison threw for 142 yards on just 15 competitions and had four touchdown passes to zero interceptions. RB Jessie Arbour was only handed the ball five times but made his mark on the game rushing for 40 yards. Also, WR Evan Rutherford made sure teams around the league start to take notice of him as he hauled in 9 catches this game bringing his total on the season to 26 receptions. Defensively the Hawkeyes were stout getting after the QB and forcing bad throws, causing two interceptions as well as racking up two sacks. As a whole the team played great and it showed in the games final score.

The Hawkeyes as well as the rest of the Varsity league are on their bye week this weekend, but next up for Oshawa is the always-tough Kingston Grenadiers who are a 3-2 team that is also fighting for a playoff position. There is no doubt this is going to be the biggest game of the season thus far as it will make or break this young Hawkeyes team. Prediction: Hawkeyes 18 Grenadiers 16
