OVFL Preview: BT Ottawa Myers and Brampton Bulldogs will battle on defense

Going in to this coming Saturday’s Ontario Varsity Football League championship game there are two win hungry squads, one who is all too familiar in this position, the Ottawa Myers Riders.Β Β On the other end of the gridiron are the Brampton Bulldogs, who haven’t been to a championship game since 2008 when they defeated the London Falcons 17-13.β€œIt takes many players with great character,” states Ralph Siciliano, head coach of the Ottawa Myers Riders.

β€œA dedicated bench staff (coaches, management and training) and strong support from our executives and fans (parents).”

These are the characteristics that Coach Siciliano believes a team needs in order to succeed.Β Β With the track record Coach Siciliano has, his beliefs work.Β Β During the five years the Riders have been in the OVFL, Siciliano has led the Riders to four consecutive league championship games and one championship win.

β€œWe are optimistic that every one of our fifty-two players will be mentally and physically ready for our trip to Oshawa,” states Siciliano.

β€œWe are all confidently aiming to win our second Championship in team history.”

The Riders last championship win was in 2009 when they defeated the London Falcons 21-10
When game time comes, the fun will start.Β Β It will prove interesting to see how the game turns out.Β Β Both divisions dominated their conference and at years end, one team performed better on passing than the other and vice versa for rushing.

The Riders have a 59% pass completion with 977-yards, 37 first downs and 36 majors, 19 on pass plays.Β Β Ottawa also have Jacob Spinella, a quarterback who isn’t afraid to throw the long ball, nor is he afraid to run with the ball.

β€œJacob Spinella’s throwing mechanics has almost been as impressive as his decision-making,” states Siciliano.Β Β β€œHe has turned into the confident field general our coaches believed he would become.”

Although the Bulldogs have a 35% pass completion with 406-yards, do not under estimate them.Β Β It is their rushing game that will prove to be a challenge for the Riders.Β Β Brampton racked up 219 carries with 2563-yards, over 1300-yards more than Ottawa. Including 43 majors 37 while rushing.

β€œWe will continue doing what we do best all season,” states David Smith, head coach of the Brampton Bulldogs.

This year’s matchup will be a battle of defense.Β Β Both teams play exceptionally well on offense.Β Β If the Bulldogs can stop Riders’ passing game they will be in good position.Β Β Likewise for Ottawa, if they can put up a wall against Brampton’s rushing game they will have the better hand.

The bantam championship final will definitely be a game not to miss.

β€œI would like to congratulate the Brampton Bulldogs on winning their conference this season, knocking off the 2011 Champions (The Cambridge Lions),” stated Siciliano.

β€œOverall our team is well prepared and peaking at the right time of the year, stated Smith.Β Β β€œWe all look forward in playing a good team like Myers.”
