Ask any coach, any coach of any sport how it feels to be heading in to the championship final.Β Β Nine times out of ten the response given will always be the same. They will tell you it is an excellent feeling to be going in to the final game of the championship but there is more to it than that.Β Β You cannot go in to a game thinking it is βin the bag.β That is when things fall apart.
For the junior division Ontario Varsity Football League Championship matchup with the Mississauga Warriors battling the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins, how could you think any other way?
The Warriors havenβt lost a game since they played the Hamilton Ironmen when they lost by one point in week four of the 2011 OVFL season.Β Β The Warriors have a perfect season with ten wins.Β Β What is even more impressive is an explosive 377-points-for and the fact they have only allowed 60-points-against.
For the Dolphins, each year they make the playoffs they advance further and further.Β Β This will be their first trip to a championship game in franchise history.Β Β The Dolphins have played exceptionally well.Β Β They go in to the final round with a 9-1 record, 345-points-for and 147-points-against.
βAre we ready?β Williams asked. βYes.β
This is something that we have worked towards.β
Heading in to Saturdayβs game, both teams have been preparing extensively.Β Β During the regular season they have been practicing twice a week. However leading up to the OVFL championship they have been operating a three-day schedule, including team meetings on the off night to go over other aspects of the game.
βWe have the tools we need to spread it around,β states Williams.Β Β βTheyβre a young team but they have a lot of heart.β
Coach MacIsaac believes the Jr. Mustangs have what it takes to win the Championship.Β Β He feels that their only season loss against the Cumberland Panthers (35-27) in week eight is a blessing in disguise.
βWe take that as a blessing,β states Williams.Β Β βWithout that loss, I donβt think we would be as strong as we are now.β
Williams continued to explain that because of their loss he feels that they now have a better understanding that they are not untouchable.
βThis truly is a case of David vs Goliath,β stated head coach Tony MacIntosh
Mississauga coaching staff was unavailable for comment.
