OVFL Recap: Junior Grenadiers fall short of perfect season

HAMILTON, ON. – July 22, 2012: A gloomy grey sky blanketed McMaster Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.Β Β The fans drew a crowd in the stands shoulder-to-shoulder graciously awaiting the Hamilton Ironmen and the Limestone District Grenadiers, as gunslingers Liam Putt and Robert Magee take the field.This was the last regular season game of the 2012 Ontario Varsity Football League junior division between the Hamilton Ironmen and the Limestone District Grenadiers.Β Β The Grenadiers were trailing by one at halftime, looking to overcome their 2011 season loss against Hamilton.Β Β Unfortunately this was not to be.Β Β Two years in a row the Ironmen have defeated the Gmen.

β€œHopefully there is no lasting impact,” stated head coach Mark Magee after Sunday, July 22 loss, their first of the season.Β Β β€œThe kids played hard, but [our] execution wasn’t our best effort.”

Grenadiers QB Robert Magee threw for 3-of-9 for 145-yards.Β Β Magee’s longest toss was score opener for the Gmen, a 43-yard pass to RB Brent Byron.Β Β Quarterbacks Chase Peck and Dylan Fisher threw for a combined 12-of-25 for 119-yards.Β Β Peck connected with Byron on a 58-yard pass for his second touchdown of the game.

The Grenadiers running game wasn’t anything spectacular either.Β Β The Gmen only managed 37-yards with one first down.

β€œThe bottom line is that Hamilton made a few more plays in the game that enabled them to win,” stated Coach Magee after the game during an email interview.

The Limestone District Grenadiers finished the 2012 OVFL season tied in second place.Β Β After eight games they came out strong with a 7-1 record; 295 points-for; 161 points-against and 14 total points.

The Grenadiers will be a tough offensive contender in the playoffs for the Provincial Championship XV.Β Β Throughout the past nine weeks the Grenadiers have racked up 2151-passing-yards, 1289-rushing-yards.

Defensively the Grenadiers will equally be a tough team to beat.Β Β Having 454 tackles and 29 sacks, the highest in the league.Β Β They also led the league in interceptions, having 18-for-102-yards.

The Grenadiers next game has yet to be scheduled.

They will find out Saturday, July 28 who they will be playing.Β Β The Cumberland Panthers will be hosting the Newmarket Bucs at Millennium Field in Ottawa.Β Β Game time is scheduled for 2:30pm.
