OVFL RECAP (Junior Varsity – Week 1): Grenadiers shock Panthers, Heydon, Boshoer & Osinga have notable performances

The junior varsity division of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) got underway this past weekend.

With seven games on the schedule, only one shutout victory was recorded as the Oshawa Hawkeyes blanked the Metro Toronto Wildcats 22-0.

Other Week 1 winners were Niagara Spears, Ottawa Myers Riders, Etobicoke Eagles, Kingston Grenadiers, Essex Ravens and Sault Ste. Marie (SSM) Sabrecats.

Here are the results from Week 1 OVFL Junior Varsity Division:

Chase Osinga

NIAGARA SPEARS 33, CAMBRIDGE LIONS 22:

Under Friday Night Lights at Kiwanis Field, Chase Osinga scored two touchdowns and amassed 203 yards on six receptions as the Niagara Spears opened their season at home with a 33-22 win over visiting Cambridge Lions.

Pivot Ryan James completed 10 passes in 16 attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns.  Dallas Bone was successful on a 15 yard field goal and added four PAT’s in the win.

On defence, Joshua Lisi caught two interceptions and registered three solo tackles.

As for the Lions, #CFCOPC pivot Michael Warner completed 18 passes in 34 attempts for 283 yards and three touchdowns.  Quinn Robertson racked up 131 yards on six receptions in the loss.  Eric Strantz added a 17 yards field goal and was successful on a conversion attempt.

Jahnei Powell caught two interceptions as well as added an assisted tackle and four solo tackles.  Braeden Berry registered four solo and five assisted tackles for the Lions.

Hayden Tripp

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 53, TORONTO THUNDER 6:

At Birchmount Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Hayden Tripp was unstoppable as he tallied five majors and rushed for 130 yards on nine carries as the Ottawa Myers Riders thrashed the Toronto Thunder 53-6.

Terrell Brown also added a score and rushed for 105 yards on two carries. Hono Iloki scored a touchdown and rushed for 74 yards on two carries. Nicklas Sua had 70 yards on carries in the win.

Aiden Arnott-Smith added three PAT’s for the Myers Riders.

#CFCOPC Kiondre Smith amassed 116 yards on six receptions for the Thunder in the loss.

ETOBICOKE EAGLES 16, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 14:

On Saturday afternoon at Father Henry Carr CHS, Keanu Brown rushed for 148 yards on 28 carries as the hosts Etobicoke Eagles edged the Mississauga Warriors 16-14.

Ife Onyemenam had five solo and three assisted tackles in the win.

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 25, CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 5:

At Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute on Saturday afternoon, Braden Hart caught an interception as well as registered two solo and 11 assisted tackles as the Kingston Grenadiers cruised to a 25-5 win over Cumberland Panthers.

Connor Rafferty was successful on a 21 yard field goal and two conversion attempts.  #CFCOPC quartetback Ben Maracle completed nine passes in 20 attempts for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

As for the Panthers, Carlvan Jabouin had 78 yards on 24 receptions in the loss.

ESSEX RAVENS 50, HAMILTON IRONMEN 30:

The Junior Varsity Hamilton Ironmen squad ended up dropping a 50-30 decision to the Essex Ravens.  The Ironmen were down 44-8 at halftime, but showed a much better effort in the 2nd half.  Adrian Allen hooked up with Anthony Pimental for scoring passes of 50 and 82 yards and Allen also galloped to the end zone on a 28 yard run.  Ethan Bestarache latched on to a 6 yard Pimental throw for a major, hoofed a 32 yard field goal and added a kick off rouge plus a convert for Hamilton.  Ravens pivot Jake Heydon threw for 5 majors on the day including two majors each to Brandon Tatsu and Justin Pope plus once to Liam O’Halloran.  Heydon ended the afternoon with 380 yards via the air on 18 completions from 29 attempts.  Kyle Byrne ran for a 14 yard score for the winners as well.

SSM Sabrecats

SAULT STE. MARIE (SSM) SABRECATS 52, YORK REGION LIONS 42:

On Saturday evening at St.Maximillian Kolbe Jordan Robinson-Wright completed 20 passes in 28 attempts for 303 yards and four touchdowns as the SSM Sabrecats escaped with a 52-42 win over hosts York Region Lions.

Nik Gervasi talled three majors and rushed for 188 yards on 15 carries.  Skylar Premo-Miceli scored two touchdowns and racked up 106 yards on five receptions.  Antwan Fair had 77 yards on three receptions while Tevin Daybutch rushed for 72 yards on six carries for the Sabrecats.

Defensively, Joseph Rosso caught an interception as well as registered six solo and eight assisted tackles.  Geryd Lesage also had an interception as well as an assisted and seven solo tackles.

As for the Lions, a bright moment in the loss was the performance of Ron Boshoer who scored three touchdowns and rushed for 205 yards on 25 carries.

Ryan Farewell tallied a major and had 97 yards on four receptions.  Pivot Anthony Pinto completed 17 passes in 26 attempts for 201 yards and three touchdowns.  John-Kurt Andreacchi added four PAT’s

Jesse McQueen led the Lions defence as he recorded one solo and one assisted tackle.  Moreover, he registered four solo and seven assisted tackles.  Colin Stainton added seven solo and three assisted tackles in the loss.

Oshawa Hawkeyes

OSHAWA HAWKEYES 22, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 0:

At York University on Saturday evening, Riley Buchanan caught an interception and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown as the Oshawa Hawkeyes earned a 22-0 shutout victory over Metro Toronto Wildcats.

Buchanan also had three solo and six assisted tackles.  Daniel Nyamiaka was successful on two conversion attempts in the win.
