OVFL Recap: JV Grenadiers shutout Panthers in second half to secure win

KINGSTON, ON. – August 4, 2012:Β Β For three years in a row the Limestone District Grenadiers have fulfilled the quest of making the playoffs in the Ontario Varsity Football League.Β Β Each year improving and advancing further up the tree.

The Grenadiers hosted the Cumberland Panthers at Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute for the Wettges Conference semi final junior division in the OVFL.

Offensively the Grenadiers were off to a great start but let up a bit through the rest of the first half of the game..
Right out of the pocket QB Chase Peck handed off to RB Konner Burtenshaw who broke through the Panthers defense and ran for a 76-yard touchdown.

A few drives they found themselves at 1stΒ & Goal they were not able to put any points on the board.

β€œWe need to capitalize more on our opportunities when we are in the red zone,” stated Coach Magee.

Despite the many weapons Cumberland possess the Grenadiers were able to keep the Panthers to just two scores.Β Β Cumberland’s third came off an interception by Dimitri Vaillancourt when he picked off a pass by Grenadiers QB Peck.

At halftime the Grenadiers were trailing 20-13 but were able to come back in the second.

In order to win games everyone needs to play well together as a team.Β Β But more importantly everyone needs to focus on his or her own jobs.Β Β If you win the battle against your man every play the rest will essentially take care of itself.

The Grenadiers did just that.

In the second half the Grenadiers defensive line didn’t allow any points and the offense threw for three more touchdowns.Β Β Final score 34-22.

β€œCoach [Rick] Miles our defensive coordinator did a great job preparing the guys all week,” stated head coach Mark Magee.

After defeating the Panthers the Grenadiers move on to the finals in the Wettges Conference.Β Β Their next matchup is on home field at L.C.V.I. against the Pickering Dolphins on Saturday, August 11, 2012.Β Β Game time is set for 1:00pm.Β Β The last time these two teams met was in March for an exhibition game, the Grenadiers upset the Dolphins by a margin.

The bantam division has also advanced in to the conference finals and will travel to Nepean to go head-to-head with the Myers Riders (8-1-0) at Minto Field, Nepean Sportsplex.Β Β Game time is also set for 1:00pm.

β€œPickering will be a very tough challenge. They are a big physical team that is extremely athletic on both sides of the ball,” stated Coach Magee.

β€œIt should be a great game.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
