OVFL Recap: Senior Grenadiers have their offense and defense picked apart

Now that the half way point has arrived for the Grenadiers, the team knows they will have to step it up in order to be a serious contender in the second half of the season.   Although as a team they are not executing one hundred percent the coaching staff still believes in them as players and as a team.

“We can do this, as players we can get together and go to the top” stated coach Tim Pendergast.

On Saturday, June 23, 2012 the Limestone District Grenadiers hosted the Cumberland Panthers for the fifth instalment of Ontario Varsity Football League action in the senior division.  The Grenadiers have just one win under their belt in the last three games.  They are currently tied in fourth place with six points after being defeated 18-7 by the Panthers.

Things looked promising for the Grenadiers when 32 seconds out of the gate defensive back Hayden Peters picked off a throw from Panthers quarterback Darcy Lavoie.  Peters sprinted 17-yards for a touchdown and kicked the extra point.  Unfortunately for the senior varsity team, the interception by Peters was the only point they were able to put on the board.

The first half of the game was nothing spectacular for the Grenadiers.  They weren’t able to get any momentum on the ground or through the air.  The Grenadiers offensive line only recorded one first down in the first 30-minutes of play.  At half time the game was tied seven all.

Despite the Panthers receiving numerous fumbles and penalties in second half, the Grenadiers were not able to get the points they needed.   Instead they allowed one more touch down, a field goal and a one-point safety.  After sixty minutes of play the Panthers defeated the Grenadiers 18-7.

Quarterback Tyler Filson threw 11-of-29 for 88-yards and handed off the ball for 93-yards after sixty.

After a disappointing loss head coach Ken Dearborn kept it simple and had just three words to say,

“Keep the faith.”

Frank Gesztesi who is a scout for McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario also attended the game.  Afterwards he spoke with slotback Mitchell O’Connor, linebacker Micah Baerwald, wide receiver Travis Pascoal, defensive back Hayden Peters and linebacker Aaron Brownlee in hopes of recruiting them when their time comes for university.

The Limestone District Grenadiers club will enjoy a two-week break and return on Saturday, July 7, 2012 when all three divisions will be at home.  The bantam Grenadiers will be hosting the Cumberland Panthers at 11:00am. The junior and senior divisions will be hosting the Oshawa Hawkeyes for their last home game of the regular season.  Game times are at 1:30pm and 4:00pm respectively.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
