Special season

OVFL:  Special milestone for Warriors

When the Mississauga Warriors take to the field on Saturday for their home opener against the Niagara Spears, the beginning of a unique campaign will unfold for the team.

“2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the Mississauga Warriors Football Club,” explained Warriors head coach Chris Hobbs. “We are hoping we can make it a very special season.”

One thing that will bode well in their quest to make it a memorable season will be the commitment that players have shown thus far.

“Many of the players on this team have been with the Warriors since we started the atom program seven years ago,” commented Hobbs. “They understand what it means to be a Warrior and what it takes to be successful.”

“This has been one of the most committed teams I have been seen at this age level.”

While the players are committed, team cohesion could be a potential area of concern for the Warriors.

“We are a young team and still need to come together,” added Hobbs.  “A number of our key guys are first year varsity players and varsity will be a big jump for them.”

Among the key returning players that will be looked upon to provide leadership are linebacker Cory Williams, offensive lineman Chad Harwood, defensive back James McCallum, running back Brandon Gordon, defensive lineman Ryan Corriea and wide receiver Timothy Nicholas.

There are several significant additions to the varsity team that include running back Javhari Bennett, quarterback Nate Hobbs [CFC TOP 100], wide receiver Trea Ivey, offensive lineman Hiroki Kinoshita, offensive lineman Justis Squires, defensive lineman Gurjant Singh [CFC TOP 100], wide receiver D’Saun Greenaway [CFC TOP 100] and defensive back Rion Rodie.

Ultimately, the Warriors look forward to the start of the OVFL season and hope to accomplish one major objective.

“I think we will be an exciting big play team,” says Hobbs.  “Our goal is to make the playoffs and then anything can happen.”

The Warriors travel for their season opener as they play the Niagara Spears on Saturday May 25th, 2o13.  Kickoff is 8:00pm.
