Kingston, ON – Following this weekend’s 21-16 win over the Ottawa Myers Riders, the senior varsity Grenadiers have advanced to the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) Provincial Championship.

“Throughout this entire season, these young men have done everything the coaching staff and I have asked of them. It’s been a long, hot summer but I know they will continue to work hard for one more week,” says senior varsity coach Mark Magee. “While the OVFL championship game is important, it is equally as important that the players enjoy this experience regardless of the outcome.”

In the early years of the franchise, the junior Grenadiers advanced to the Provincial Championship twice, once taking the championship title over the Hamilton Ironman in 2004. However, this is the first conference championship for a senior varsity Grenadier team since its inception in 2005.

“Saturday’s upset over Myers makes our varsity Grenadiers the eastern (Wettges) conference champions who are advancing to the OVFL Provincial Championship,” says Alexandra Reyes-Walsh, executive director. “This is a big week for our association and for highlighting amateur football to the Kingston community.”

The Grenadiers will face the western (Adam) conference champion Cambridge Lions who defeated the first place Niagara Spears 41-7 enroute to Saturday’s championship game.

The OVFL senior championship game will be held at McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Stadium next Saturday, Aug 6. Game time is set for 5:30.

“We want to thank all of our supporters. Your powerful, united voice and inexhaustible spirit has helped create the absolute best game day atmosphere in varsity football,” added Reyes-Walsh.
