OVFL: Varsity Raiders notch big win to stay in playoff hunt

The Markham Varsity Raiders hammered the Newmarket Bucs 41-8 to cruise to their easiest victory of the season and improve their record to 4-2.

In an intense game that saw two GTA rivals battle for their own turf, Markham prevailed with a complete effort from both their offence and defence.

Quarterback Marcus Arkarakas threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were caught by receiver Keegan Munro. The Raiders also combined for 239 rushing yards and Daniel Yashinsky returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown.

After a lopsided 25 point loss in Week 1, the Raiders have responded with four victories in their past five games and have won by a margin of 58 points in their last two games combined. No matter the results in the final quarter of the regular season, the Raiders can call 2012 a success and a major improvement over last year.

On the other side, the Bucs dropped their third straight to fall to 1-5 on the season. Their offence cannot seem to get going, combining for an average of less than six points per game. The Raiders are also transitioning under new Head Coach Andrew Edge, who took the reigns midway through Week 2 and has pledged to take a careful look and reassess his team.

Connor MacCallum had a decent game at quarterback for the Bucs, completing six of his eight passes for a total of 78 yards and also led the team in receptions, with three for a total of 26 yards. The running game could not get going however, gaining only 63 yards from scrimmage.

The Bucs desperately need to win their final two games of the season against the Cornwall Wildcats and Pickering Dolphins. The Raiders find themselves in a comfortable position near the top of the standings, but close out against tough teams from Etobicoke and Toronto.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
