Penalties and turnovers

OVFL: The undisciplined Cowboys struggle in week two as they continue the search for their first win

After an opening weekend that did not go as plan for the Cowboys as they were on the short side of a lop-sided score, they entered week two eager to take a big step forward by winning their first game. The Etobicoke Eagles seemed like the perfect match-up for the Cowboys, as they also struggled in week one and were unable to score a point against the Hamilton Ironmen.

The Cowboys defense played a solid game, limiting the Eagles to two touchdowns on the ground and 225 of total offense. The Eagles offense was fueled on the ground by their trio of running backs: Neko Hamilton, Donald Shaw, and Jamal Crooks. Hamilton recorded the most success by registering a 33-yard run and finished his day with 101 yards rushing on 8 carries.

Despite playing a good defensive game, the Cowboys heavily struggled in all other aspects, due to their undisciplined play.

β€œWe beat ourselves out there. Turnovers and around 100 yards in penalties doesn’t put a team in a position to compete to win”, said Cowboys head coach Jon Kronemeyer.

The end outcome of the game was 17-0 in favour of the Eagles. Etobicoke was able to control the majority of the game because of their effective rushing game and a stout defense that caused seven turnovers.

After back to back loses the Cowboys head into week three against the 1-1 Cambridge Lions.

β€œ We have to play discipline football, Cambridge is a tough team so we have to have all aspects of our fined tuned and ready to go”, said Kronemeyer.

Look for a few new additions to the Cowboys this week that will help make their offense more competitive.

The Cowboys play on the road again this week in Cambridge. Catch the game at Jacob Hespeler field – game time is at 3 pm.
