PREVIEW: Clan look to bounce back against Azusa Pacific

Burnaby, BC – Simon Fraser University Clan football team (0-2) will be hitting the road for the first time this season, as they travel down south to Azusa, CAΒ Saturday.

SFU will be taking on the reigning conference champions, the Azusa Pacific Cougars (1-1).

The Clan are coming off of a tough outing against Western Oregon last Saturday, 38-14, as the offence could not fully put it together in the Wolves territory coming up just short on multiple drives.

Quarterback Ryan Stanford (Phoenix, AZ) threw just shy of 380 yards, including a touchdown pass to running back Cole Tudor (Pickering, ON) at the end of the first half to cut the deficit to ten points.

In total, eight different players had at least one reception, which included Bobby Pospischil (Coquitlam, BC) having a game high 10 receptions for 145 yards.

Also, making his first start in his career, Sam Swerhone (Ridgefield, WA) caught five passes for 55 yards, with three going for first downs.

Running back Chris Tolbert (Silver Springs, MD) put the Clan on the board early in the second quarter, which tied the game at seven at the time.

On defence, defensive end Jamie Puffer (Verona, ON) had another strong outing as he added to his sack total where he sits first in the GNAC with three sacks in two games.

Against Western Oregon, Puffer totaled five tackles, three coming for a loss, while batting a ball down at the line of scrimmage.

Additionally,Β Nikolai KarpunΒ (North Delta, BC) was named the GNAC Special Teams athlete of the week, following his performance against WOU, averaging 47 yards on five punts game.

He had a long of 52 yards, and after two weeks is averaging 46.3 yards per punt, which is better than the GNAC all-time record of 44.9 yards.

SFU will be looking to get revenge against the Cougars after dropping a close 44-36 game in Azusa a season ago.

To do so, the team will need to focus on 2013 GNAC Player of the Year, running back Terrell Watson, who enters the game second in the GNAC with 126.5 rushing yards per-game on average while having three touchdowns to his name.

The game will kick off atΒ 6:00 p.m. this Saturday, September 20.
