RECAP: Hurricanes one win away from repeat, Lions win thriller in Niagara

The postseason is heating up in both the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and Ontario Football Conference (OVFL).

After this weekend’s games in the OVFL, the Essex Ravens have advanced to the Adam Conference, where the team will host the Cambridge Lions.Β  In the Wettges Conference final, it will be a crosstown rivalry as the Ottawa Myers Riders will face the Kingston Grenadiers.

Here is the schedule for the OVFL Conference Finals:

As for the OFC, the Hamilton Hurricanes will look to defend the league Championship Title in front of the hometown crowd. Β The Hurricanes were victorious in the Doug Dittmer Conference Final while the Huronia Stallions came out on top in the Mike Ramsay Conference Final. Β The Hurricanes will host the Stallions in the OFC Championship Final at McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday August 9th, 2014.Β  Kickoff is 7:00pm.

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

Essex versus Mississauga OVFL 2014 Playoffs

ESSEX RAVENS 45, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 29:

At University of Windsor, Jakoby Jones scored two touchdowns and rushed for 230 yards on 22 carries as the Essex Ravens have advanced to the Adam Conference Championship by defeating the Mississauga Warriors 45-29.

Matteo Del Brocco tallied a major and had 71 yards on three receptions for the Ravens.Β  Pivot Anthony Bontorin completed seven passes in 13 attempts for 161 yards and three passing touchdowns. Hugh Paulin added an 11 yard field goal and six PAT’s in the victory.

As for the Warriors, D’Saun Greenaway scored three touchdowns and racked up 115 yards on five receptions.Β Β  Nate Hobbs completed 19 passes in 38 attempts for 240 yards and four passing touchdowns.Β  Dante Brown was successful on two conversion attempts.

On defense, Andrea Takudzwa recorded a solo sack as well as registered five solo and an assisted tackle. Ryan Bartlett added six solo tackles in the loss.

Myers Riders OVFL Playoffs 2014 2

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 41, SCARBOROUGH THUNDER 6:

At Minto Field, Matthew Duffy completed 20 passes in 29 attempts for 270 yards and three passing touchdowns as the Ottawa Myers Riders cruised to a 41-6 win over the visiting Scarborough Thunder.

Keenan Tanti tallied two majors while Jahdel Ferron and Jaegar Prot each scored a touchdown for the Myers Riders.Β  Connor Ayre added six PAT’s.

Abed Hamidi led the defense with a solo sack as well as two solo and four assisted tackles in the win.

As for the Thunder, Dylan Laird recorded a solo and an assisted sack. Also, Laird registered five solo and four assisted tackles in the loss.

With this win, the Myers Riders advance to the Wettges Conference Championship.

Cornwall versus Kingston OVFL 2014 Playoffs

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 49, CORNWALL WILDCATS 26:

At Joe St. Denis Field, Dylan Fisher completed 16 passes in 27 attempts for 244 yards and three passing touchdowns as the Kingston Grenadiers earned a 49-26 victory over the Cornwall Wildcats to advance to the Wettges Conference Final.

Harry Robinson caught an interception and ran into the end zone for a 31 yard touchdown.Β  Konner Burtenshaw (107 yards on 11 carries), Harris McEachern (77 yards on four receptions) and Jeremy Pendergast (62 yards on four receptions) each tallied a major for the Grenadiers.Β  Michael Bashall added two field goals (40 yards, 24 yards) and five PAT’s.

On defense, Robinson registered four solo and two assisted tackles.Β  Dylan Bell recorded a solo sack as well as three solo and three assisted tackles.Β  Lance Cellini added six solo and two assisted tackles in the victory.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 28, NIAGARA SPEARS 25:

At Kiwanis Field, James Roberts completed 18 passes in 34 attempts for 213 yards, two passing touchdown, 23 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown as the Cambridge Lions won a 28-25 thriller against the Niagara Spears to advance to the Adam Conference Final.

Brendan McCracken also scored two touchdowns while Alexander Salytchev added a major for the Lions. Owen Prutton was successful on two conversion attempts.

Devin Keeling led the Lions defense with eight solo and six assisted tackles.Β  Mitch Weiler added eight solo and two assisted tackles.Β  Prutton chipped in with five solo and four assisted tackles in the win.
