RECAP (ONT): Rookie Simmonds powers CFC#4NP Saints over CFC#26 Warriors

CFC#4NP Saints defeated the Huron Heights Warriors 20-3 this afternoon at the Yuill Family Athletic Complex.

The Warriors enter this season ranked 26th overall in Canada by CFC. Thus the Saints will close out their non-conference schedule a perfect 2-0 with victories over two nationally ranked programs.

Entering into yesterday’s game, the Saints defence knew it was facing a huge challenge going up against a big and physical Huron Heights team that is known for running the unconventional triple option offence. After surrendering a few big plays early, the Saints defence found itself and mostly controlled the Warriors offence in the 2nd half. Considering that our own punt team intentionally surrendered a safety for two points, the defence only allowed one point for the entire game. Once again, linebackers Walter Karabin, Nick Grossi and Hamza Kabir were outstanding, while Douglas Chen-Young made several big plays on the defensive line. Also full credit to the entire secondary for making several key tackles, while also totally smothering any Warriors’ attempt to establish a passing game.

Offensively, the Saints opened the game with a long drive that resulted in a touchdown when QB Ben Schmidt threw a strike to TE Andrew Biddell in the corner of the end zone. WR Will Merkel made a tremendous long reception earlier in the drive on a key 2nd and long to move the chains and extend the drive. For the remainder of the game, particularly once the rain started to pour, RB Adre Simmonds took over. Flashing his tremendous speed and change-of-direction ability, Adre also showed a physicality as he finished many of his runs with authority. The young rookie rushed for over 150 yards and 2 touchdowns. Another huge shout out goes to the Saints offensive line. The big ā€˜war daddies,ā€™ led by Gregor MacKellar, Lucas Ferreria,#CFC100 George Hutchings, Cayne Lander and Douglas Chen-Young did an outstanding job controlling the line of scrimmage, particularly in the 2nd half.

Next up for the 2-0 Saints is their first CISAA conference game as they travel down to UCC to face the arch-rival Blues at their homecoming next Saturday.
