Keegan Treloar kicked a 45-yard field goal with 27 seconds left to play to give the Concordia Stingers a 30-28 victory over the McGill Redmen in the 28th annual Shrine Bowl at Concordia Stadium in Montreal on Saturday afternoon.
The fourth-year kicker from Brandon, Man. connected on three field goals (13, 15 and 45 yards) and a single for a total of 10 points in the game.
His efforts were instrumental in helping Concordia pick up the victory and finish the regular season with a 5-3 win-loss record. It represents a huge turn-around for the Stingers who finished with a 0-8 record in 2013.
Concordia finishes in fourth place in the RSEQ football conference and will travel to Quebec City to meet the first-place Laval Rouge et Or in semifinal action next Saturday at 1 p.m.
McGill wraps up the season in last place with a 0-8 record.
Overall Concordia rolled up 26 first downs and 347 yards of offence. Quarterback François Dessureault completed 18 of 38 passes for 279 yards. His favorite target was Shayne Stinson who caught seven passes for 120 yards. Running back Olivier Dupont was also a force, carrying the ball 19 times for 113 yards and a touchdown with 52 seconds left in the first half.
The only other Stinger major came right before 45 seconds before halftime when rookie cornerback Jordan McLaren recovered the ball after a McGill returner fumbled the kickoff in his own end zone.
McGill had 25 first downs and a total offence of 313 yards. Rookie quarterback Joel Houle completed 20 of 39 passes and threw three interceptions. He also had a one-yard run for a touchdown.
The other McGill majors came from running back Raphael Casey who scored on a one-yard run at 6:19 of the first quarter and running back Pelle Jorgen who also scored on a one-yard run at 10:36 of the second quarter.

MONTREAL β Keegan Treloar kicked a game-winning 45-yard field with 27 seconds remaining as Concordia rallied from a 13-point deficit to edge McGill 30-28 in the 28thannual Montreal Shrine Bowl at Concordia Stadium, Saturday.
It put an end to a difficult season for the Redmen, who finished with a 1-8 record overall, including an 0-8 mark in RSEQ play.
Despite the drama of a thrilling finish, the game was marred by a combined 34 penalties for a whopping 170 yards of real estate.
McGill, which dressed a roster featuring 25 first-year players, including 17 true freshmen, jumped into an 18-5
With less than five minutes remaining in the second quarter, largely on the strength a pair of one-yard TD runs by Raphael Casey and Pelle Jorgen.
But the Stingers got untracked when Olivier Dupont β who rushed for a game-high 113 yards on 19 carries β
scored on a three-yard run with 52 seconds left in the half and Jordan McLaren jumped on a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, in the endzone, to take a 22-18 lead into the intermission.
McGill regained the lead late in the third stanza when freshman quarterback dove into the endzone on a one-yard plunge at 11:15, then added a safety for a 28-22 advantage.
Treloar took over in the final stanza, adding a pair of field goals, sandwiched around a safety, to finished with a dozen points. He went 3-for-3 in field-goal attempts, connecting from 13, 15 and 45 yards, added a pair of conversions and a rouge on a lengthy kickoff. He averaged 65.7 yards on three kickoffs
Concordia had a 347-313 advantage in net yards, with a 26-25 margin in first downs.
Francois Dussureault, the Stingers pivot, completed 18 of 38 passing attempts for 279 yards, no TDs and no interceptions. His favourite target was Shayne Stinson, who snared seven balls for 120 yards.
For McGill, Houle was 20-for-39 passing for 211 yards and three interceptions.
Louis Brouillette led McGill in receiving with six catches for 60 yards. Casey was the team’s leading rusher with 80 yards on 22 carries.
Concordia finished tied with Sherbrooke for the last two playoff spots in the six-team RSEQ conference but the Vert & Or hold the tie-breaker on point differential in the two-game series that they split. So the fourth-place Stingers will travel to No.1-ranked Laval in a semifinal next Saturday. Laval, which were upset 13-9 by Montreal Saturday, finished at 7-1. Β The other RSEQ semi will feature third-seeded Sherbrooke (5-3) in Montreal against the Carabins (7-1).

GAITERS LOSE MAYORβS CUP AS SEASON COMES TO AN END
November 1, 2014
SHERBROOKE, Que. β Receiver Nathan Heather and running back Ronlee King-Fileen both scored touchdowns for the Bishopβs Gaiters in their final RSEQ University Football game on Saturday, November 1st.Β Β Their majors were not enough as cross-town rival Sherbrooke re-claimed the Mayorβs Cup 35-14 on Coulter Field.
For Sherbrooke it was their seventh Mayorβs Cup victory in the gameβs nine-year existence.Β They earn it for the second time on Coulter Field after losing the cup to the Gaiters on their home field a year ago.
The Vert et Or scored the gameβs first points on a 31-yard field goal off the foot of Mathieu Hebert (Sherbrooke, Que.). They tacked on a touchdown to grab a 10-0 lead after the first frame.Β The host Gaiters refused to relinquish the cup without a fight.Β King-Fileen (Toronto) scampered 28-yards just shy of the halfway mark of the second quarter to cut the visitors lead to 10-7.Β Sherbrooke responded with a single and a late touchdown to re-grab momentum and an 18-7 lead heading into halftime.
Another Hebert rouge opened the third quarter scoring after a missed field goal at the 4:40 mark.Β On the ensuing drive the two-headed quarterback attack of Gaiters led by Travis Eman (Brampton, Ont.) and Alexandre Bouffard (Sherbrooke) marched Bishopβs down the field.Β Eman connected with Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) on a 31-yard strike to cut the lead to 19-14.
Bishopβs had the momentum as the teamsβ entered the final frame. On the first play of the fourth quarter the Gaiters faked a punt that had King-Fileen rush 14 yards on 3-11.Β Unfortunately for the hosts that momentum was short lived as the drive came to an abrupt halt three plays later when the Gaiters coughed up the ball.Β The Vert et Or in turn orchestrated an eight-play, 92-yard drive for a deflating major and a 26-14 advantage.Β Sherbrooke put the game out of reach as they scored on their very next drive after Bishopβs had conceded a safety.Β The final on the brisk Lennoxville afternoon was 35-14 in favour of the visitors.
βSherbrooke is a good football team,β said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey.Β βWe are a young team and made too many mistakes.Β Itβs disappointing that our season is over but we are going to practice next week and get the guys used to playing at this time of year.Β Iβm looking forward to our future.β
Eman finished as the games leading rusher with 112 yards on 12 rushes. He was 7-12 for 97 yards with a major and an interception through the air. Bouffard also primarily used his legs, rushing for 83 yards on 11 carries and completing one pass in four attempts.Β Heather caught two passes for 46 yards, while fellow graduating receiver Yaata Nyantakyi (Brampton, Ont.) received four passes for 41 yards. King-Fileen carried the ball eight times for 64 yards. The Gaiters ran 59 plays tallying 367 yards.Β Jeremi Roch (Montreal) led Sherbrooke to 538 total yards of offense.Β He was 29-for-40 for 397 yards and two touchdowns.
Bishopβs 2014 campaign comes to a close at 1-7 while Sherbrooke finishes at 5-3 and earns a date with the Montreal Carabins (7-1) in the RSEQ semi-final.Β The other semi-final will see the Laval Rouge et Or (7-1) hosting the Concordia Stingers (5-3).
